Chapter 92: Three Years

The temple was silent. Luo Jinxiao could only hear her own breathing.

For a moment, she doubted whether she was still dreaming, but everything around her felt too real.

“Sister,” Luo Ning spoke.

Luo Jinxiao tried to calm herself and gather her thoughts. The woman in black was actually Luo Ning! No wonder she had felt a sense of familiarity, no wonder Luo Ning’s recent behavior had been so strange and unpredictable.

“What’s going on?” Luo Jinxiao asked, taking a deep breath and raising her eyes to meet Luo Ning’s. “Did you know all this would happen?”

Luo Ning nodded, then shook her head.

“Was Qu Weiyin’s outburst today your doing?” Luo Jinxiao’s voice trembled as she spoke.

Luo Ning vehemently shook her head, a hint of sorrow in her expression. “No, how could I do anything to hurt you? I knew this day would come for her, but I never imagined it would happen so suddenly. Someone else is manipulating her actions.”

Relieved to hear that it wasn’t Luo Ning’s scheme, Luo Jinxiao pressed on, “Then what did you mean earlier? Why did you approach me, pretending to be my sister?”

“I wasn’t pretending. I am your sister – in this life, in the last one, always,” Luo Ning took a couple of steps closer to Luo Jinxiao, her expression complex. “Sister, do you know about the God Clan?”

The God Clan? Of course, Luo Jinxiao knew. Suddenly, a realization dawned on her, and her eyes widened.

Bathed in the glow of the night pearls, Luo Ning’s black robes seemed to weigh heavily on her shoulders. She looked at Luo Jinxiao and slowly said, “Sister, you are the only one, the last God in this world.”

Luo Jinxiao felt that everything that had happened today was too bizarre.

So bizarre that even hearing such an unbelievable statement barely caused a ripple in her heart.

“I know you don’t believe me. Do you remember the sudden surge of power you felt in the Changming Pagoda?” Luo Ning asked.

Luo Jinxiao remembered. She had heard an ancient voice that day. Now, she realized that the voice belonged to the woman in black, to Luo Ning.

“And the Divine Soul Lamp didn’t actually contain a soul, but a strand of undissipated divine power. It was originally yours. If you weren’t a god, how could you have withstood the impact of divine power?”

As much as Luo Jinxiao didn’t want to admit it, she found herself being convinced.

“You said it was your divine power, are you a god too?” Luo Jinxiao asked.

Luo Ning shook her head slightly. “I am, and I am not. Just as there are failures and geniuses in the immortal realm, the same is true for the God Clan. In the Divine Realm, I was the failure. You are different, sister. You are the glory of the God Clan.”

“My power is so weak that I can’t even defeat an ordinary cultivator. I could only study unorthodox methods. But it’s because of this that I gained the ability to transcend time and bring you back to this moment.”

“So, you’re the reason I returned to two thousand years ago?” Luo Jinxiao was shocked. “What about Qu Weiyin? Why was she reborn?”

A look of embarrassment crossed Luo Ning’s face.

“There was a slight error in the formation. I accidentally brought back more people than intended,” Luo Ning scratched her head sheepishly.

Luo Jinxiao was speechless.

Luo Ning coughed softly, then turned serious. “What you don’t know is that after you died, Demon Lord Qu Weiyin also died. Later, the immortal realm invaded the demon realm and slaughtered all the demons. The heavens were enraged and brought down punishment – floods, storms, volcanoes, and lightning. All life in the eight wilderness suffered, resulting in unimaginable devastation.”

“Just like the fall of the God Clan before, no matter how powerful, no one can resist the will of heaven. Father God had foreseen all of this. He used all his divine power to preserve my life and tasked me with finding your reincarnation to prevent the collapse of the world.”

“But when I finally found your soul among countless beings, you had already died in the great battle between immortals and demons. I couldn’t think of any other way but to use the formation to bring your soul back to two thousand years ago, before the Demon Lord was born.”

“Then, I was reborn as the youngest daughter of the Luo family, hoping to stay by your side and protect you.”

As Luo Ning finished speaking, Luo Jinxiao felt her mind in chaos. She had suddenly received too much information to process at once.

After pondering for a long time, she finally asked, “You brought me back to before the Demon Lord’s birth and made me the one without spiritual roots, hoping I would prevent Qu Weiyin from turning into a demon? Weren’t you afraid I would die again that night? And why didn’t you tell me sooner, why wait until now?”

“No, I just thought that a newly turned demon Qu Weiyin would be easier to deal with, so I chose two thousand years ago. My intention was for you to borrow the body of anyone who was about to die, but I didn’t expect you to be reborn right in front of Qu Weiyin. By the time I realized it, it was too late. But fortunately, Qu Weiyin didn’t turn into a demon, and when I saw you, you had already gained spiritual roots.”

“I saw you living happily and thought everything would be fine, so I kept this secret. But later, many things happened. I discovered that not only you, but many from the demon race had also come back and were still causing trouble. And Qu Weiyin still couldn’t escape her fate of turning demonic. Since then, I knew everything would happen again, and that catastrophe might even come earlier, possibly very soon.”

“But you were truly happy, you and Qu Weiyin were truly in love. I didn’t want to forcefully break this happiness, so I could only drag it out, watching everything unfold. But today, I have no choice, there’s no more time, sister,” Luo Ning said, her eyes dimming, a mist swirling in her dark pupils.

“Qu Weiyin has lost her mind, she has become that bloodthirsty Demon Lord again. The demons want revenge for the massacre by the immortals, and now the situation is reversed, resulting in the same suffering for all beings. I have a premonition, a premonition that the four seas and eight wildernesses will soon face the punishment of heaven again.”

“My divine power was already weak, and what’s left has been almost completely depleted by the river of time. Although my demigod status grants me powers beyond ordinary people, it’s not enough to stop any tragedy. I need you.”

As Luo Ning spoke, tears streamed down her face. She stepped forward and grabbed Luo Jinxiao’s arm.

Luo Jinxiao was stunned, staring at Luo Ning.

In such a short time, she had absorbed so much information, her mind reeling with countless emotions. In the end, only the word ‘fate’ remained.

“But I’m no longer a god, what can I do?” she asked.

Luo Ning’s eyes lit up at her question. She gripped Luo Jinxiao’s hand and pulled her towards the center of the temple, speaking urgently, “You are a god, and the most powerful one. Everything about you remains in the Divine Burial Ground, sealed forever.”

Luo Ning waved her hand, and suddenly a flash of white light appeared. In the place where she had retrieved Wujue, the ruby throne reappeared.

Luo Ning pulled Luo Jinxiao along, stumbling towards the throne. The throne shimmered with a faint light, noble and cold, remaining pristine even after the countless collapses of the temple.

Luo Jinxiao looked at Luo Ning questioningly.

“This throne is yours. When you died, you were sitting on this throne. It has preserved everything about you.”

“Can I really stop some kind of catastrophe?” Luo Jinxiao suddenly asked.

“Father God said only you can,” Luo Ning replied, emphasizing each word.

Luo Jinxiao sighed. She reached out to touch the throne but felt nothing extraordinary. It seemed completely unremarkable.

In her previous life, when she was young, she often dreamed of becoming the most powerful person, bringing blessings to the people, hunting demons and monsters, and protecting her homeland. Now that she had this opportunity, she realized it wasn’t as glorious as she’d imagined.

She turned to sit, but Luo Ning suddenly stopped her.

“Sister, you need to think carefully. Once you sit down, your divine body will be reconstructed. It might be very painful, and it might take a long time,” Luo Ning said softly.

Luo Jinxiao hesitated, her thoughts drifting to Qu Weiyin. She believed Luo Ning wouldn’t lie to her, which meant Qu Weiyin had truly become the Demon Lord.

She probably doesn’t remember me anymore, Luo Jinxiao thought.

A sharp pain pierced Luo Jinxiao’s heart. She looked up and said, “I want to see her one more time.”

Pity flickered in Luo Ning’s eyes. “But the demon realm isn’t easy to enter, even for you now, sister. It will take some effort. Rumors of the Demon Lord’s emergence are spreading throughout the mortal realm. If you don’t believe me…”

“I believe you,” Luo Jinxiao interrupted, her expression downcast. “I just… want to see her.”

Then she shook her head with a bitter smile. “Never mind. What good would it do now? I can’t help her or myself. You’re right. If we don’t stop this divine punishment, we’ll all end up dead anyway.”

With that, Luo Jinxiao steeled her resolve and turned to sit on the throne.

In an instant, a hazy white mist enveloped her. She felt her soul retreating through countless lights and shadows. Scenes flashed around her – bustling streets, mountains and rivers, days and nights, dynasties rising and falling.

When the images suddenly stopped, her mind was flooded with countless memories.

For most of these memories, the scene hardly changed – just an island, a sky, and endless white clouds.

Day after day, she sat on the island, gazing down at the blurry, miniature ground below. There was nothing much there, mostly just blue ocean, shifting at an imperceptible pace.

Occasionally, other gods would come to challenge her. These were her only moments of joy, but they were brief. It never took more than three or four moves to defeat them.

Sometimes, she would descend from the island to explore, but all she found was desolation. Eventually, she stopped looking.

As days passed, the loneliness never lessened. The distant ocean gradually receded, revealing yellow dust. Later, grass and trees grew on that dust, turning the blue expanse into a patchwork of blue and green.

And so, when challenged by other gods, she took pleasure in blasting away chunks of land, creating valleys and mountains.

Later, moving figures appeared on the ground, gradually building houses, cultivating fields, and hunting beasts. Then, Father God forbade her from leaving the island.

Her life became increasingly monotonous and solitary. She lay there day and night, feeling as if she would eventually turn into a giant fossil.

Fortunately, after many, many years, Father God brought her a small bundle of flesh. It was fragile, crying at the slightest touch, so soft. She hated the crying and tossed it aside, keeping her distance.

Many more years passed, and the fleshy bundle grew into something resembling her, though still weak and incapable of fighting. The bundle said it wasn’t a pure-blooded god, only possessing half the divine bloodline.

Life became slightly more interesting, as the bundle would tell jokes and play games. Although, in her opinion, those games were incredibly dull, especially the one involving flipping a rope around to create different patterns.

She and the bundle explored the entire island, endlessly playing various games. During this time, the distant ground, which she had paid little attention to, acquired many new features.

The bundle said its home wasn’t on the island, but on that distant land. Its mother wasn’t a god, and it wanted to go home.

So she decided to help it return.

So, she broke the barrier of the Celestial Realm, defeated the divine guards, and pulled the bundle down from the island. However, they were caught halfway by Father God and bound back to their original place.

Father God was furious and decreed that she would never be allowed to leave the Celestial Realm again. He told her that the bundle was her sister, and neither of them were allowed to leave.

Long tired of her boring divine existence, she broke free and challenged Father God. They fought fiercely, darkening the sky and shaking the earth. In the end, she was still beaten down, left barely alive.

While she recovered, the bundle cried every day while tending to her wounds. Unable to move, she could only lie there and listen to the bundle recount the happenings on the island.

She heard that many were unhappy with Father God’s rule and wanted to overthrow him. Then, somehow, the Celestial Realm split into two factions, beginning a war of slaughter.

The bundle was terrified and huddled in the temple, afraid to venture out. But she wasn’t afraid. She had long grown tired of living. Anyone who dared to intrude upon the temple with ill intentions was slain by her sword, their bodies piling up into mountains, their blood flowing like rivers.

The battle between gods was earth-shattering, blotting out the sun and moon. Later, she heard that Father God had won, and those who had opposed him were all killed. A month of blood rain followed, staining the mountains and rivers red.

Suddenly, she couldn’t understand the meaning of her million-year existence, and the purpose of her immense power.

Was it for the slaughter of the weak, or for the unification of all realms?

She pondered for a long time but couldn’t find an answer. So, on a bright, sunny morning, she sat on her throne and plunged her sword into her own chest.

In that moment, she finally understood the meaning of a word often heard in the mortal realm:

Release.

Luo Jinxiao, who had been frowning deeply, suddenly became calm. Her head tilted to the side, slumping on the throne. She looked as if she were dead, or perhaps simply asleep.

A gentle breeze blew through the temple, ruffling her long, black hair.

Luo Ning, who had been holding her breath in anxiety, finally let out a sigh of relief. She suddenly knelt down, resting her head on Luo Jinxiao’s lap, tears streaming down her face as she murmured to herself.

“Sister, you finally remember me, don’t you?”

“I’ll wait for you to wake up.”

Outside the silent Celestial Realm, everything had fallen into chaos and despair. The demon realm suddenly rose to power, and the Demon Lord emerged. Immortals and mortals alike lived in constant fear.

The demon realm quickly dominated the mortal world, committing countless atrocities. The immortal realm was unable to mount a significant defense, with only a few major sects, led by the Wuhui Sect, barely holding their ground.

The Wuhui Mountain and Wuzhong City, guarded by the Wuhui Sect, remained the last bastion of peace.

Several more battles between immortals and demons ensued Finally, the universally reviled and feared Demon Lord appeared before the public. To everyone’s shock, they discovered that the allegedly bloodthirsty and terrifying Demon Lord was none other than Qu Weiyin of the Wuhui Sect.

Now, wherever Qu Weiyin passed, it was said that the air was filled with heart-wrenching cries, all vegetation withered, and everything perished.

The mortal world had fallen into a state of intense suffering.

And this misery continued for three long years.
