AU: The Heiress and The Bodyguard Part 2

The assistant dutifully went to investigate. A short while later, they discreetly slipped Miki a note, careful not to interrupt the important conversation.

During a brief pause, Miki glanced at the note, quickly understanding the situation.

So these were the new bodyguards…

Security arrangements were handled by her staff, not something the heiress needed to concern herself with, so Miki hadn’t paid much attention to who had been hired.

After the business meeting concluded, her assistant asked if she needed anything from the new bodyguards.

Miki considered for a moment before saying coolly, “Tell them to leave.”

“Why?” The assistant was confused. “We paid top dollar for them. They’re supposedly the best in the business – elite among elites. They’re guaranteed to ensure your safety.”

Miki brow twitched as she struggled to suppress her doubts. She had, after all, just overheard that girl’s inner thoughts…

The moment she laid eyes on a stranger, she thought about marrying them? Judging by appearances alone, no less. Where was the professionalism in that? Would such a bodyguard be easily swayed by an enemy’s charm?

The assistant pressed on, “Shouldn’t you at least assess their skills first?”

After a moment’s consideration, Miki relented. “Fine, we’ll see. But keep the backup security plans in place.”

The ability to hear thoughts was a secret she had kept for over twenty years. Dismissing someone solely based on their inner thoughts would be excessive, even for her.

“Understood. Everything is already arranged!”

Wakako had no idea she’d nearly been fired because of her internal screaming. Instead, she was happily exploring the mansion with Lin Lin.

This was always their first task at a new location – as security professionals, they needed to thoroughly understand the layout, identifying all possible entry and hiding points.

However, the required maid uniforms made their work somewhat awkward.

Lin Lin nearly tripped on her dress several times, looking up at her shijie in confusion: “Why aren’t you tripping on your skirt?”

Wakako: “…Because my legs are longer, and the dress doesn’t touch the ground?”

Lin Lin fell silent, turning away in resignation.

The pair meticulously examined every corner of the mansion, working in perfect sync, filling pages of notes throughout the evening.

Before they knew it, they’d missed dinner and night had fallen.

“Look!” Lin Lin stood by a third-floor balcony window, pointing. “Someone’s there… looks familiar… isn’t that the heiress?”

After all, she was the only one in the mansion not wearing a uniform.

Wakako, who hadn’t been particularly interested, suddenly rushed to Lin Lin’s side, “Where?”

It didn’t take long for her to spot Miki.

Behind the mansion stretched a large golf course. According to the butler, due to her frail health, the heiress rarely played, preferring to sit on the lawn and read.

In the deep night, a single area was illuminated by bright lights, where a beautiful figure in white sat beneath a parasol.

Wakako stared, her lips parting, but no words came out.

Their training allowed them to see clearly even in the dark.

Wakako could make out every detail – Miss Miki holding a book, reading quietly with a serene expression.

The sight was breathtaking, like a painting come to life.

“Shijie?” Lin Lin waved her hand in front of Wakako’s face. “What are you staring at?”

The heiress was just reading, wasn’t she?

What, had she never seen someone read before?

Wakako snapped out of her trance and abruptly crouched down, covering her face with both hands.

— Oh no.

She thought.

— What do I do, I think I’m really in love…

— I’ve only seen Miss Miki twice, just from a distance at that. I haven’t even spoken to her, but my heart is racing, like it’s going to jump out of my chest.

Wakako didn’t see Miss Miki look up from her book, her gaze sharply fixed in their direction.

Lin Lin saw it but didn’t think the heiress was looking at them specifically. After all, there were so many maids around, she probably couldn’t tell them apart…

She was more concerned about her shijie’s reaction. “What’s wrong with you?”

Finally, Wakako slowly uncovered her flushed face.

“I think,” she said softly, “I’ve fallen in love with Miss Miki at first sight.”

Lin Lin was confused: “You’ve only seen her twice? Wait, you’re gay?”

She didn’t even know where to start.

“I don’t know, but I think love can strike in an instant.” Sadness crept into Wakako’s eyes. “But… she’s our client.”

— A bodyguard can’t have feelings for their client, can they?

—Besides, Miss Miki is a billionaire heiress. We’re not even in the same world…

Wakako had never felt this way before. The more she thought about it, the more confused she became, sinking into despair.

Lin Lin was even more confused.

At her age, she didn’t know how to comfort her shijie, so she simply suggested, “Let’s grab dinner first. Maybe talking over food will help.”

But Wakako only grew more miserable.

— How can I think of anything but Miss Miki? Even the way her hair moves in the wind is so beautiful…

— I don’t think I can eat tonight, I have no appetite at all…

She stood up, taking one last longing look towards the lawn. Miss Miki was still reading, as if completely unaware of her existence.

Wakako pursed her lips and went to dinner with Lin Lin.

Miki stared at the same page of her book for ten minutes.

The text she usually breezed through at lightning speed had somehow transformed into incomprehensible tadpoles swimming before her eyes.

She took a deep breath and gently set down the book.

“Finished reading for today, Miss?” her assistant asked, sensing her mood.

“Yes.” Miki voice betrayed nothing. “I’m going to rest.”

The fourth floor was exclusively for the heiress. No one else was allowed up without her permission, and even then, only during the day.

So, at night, Miki was alone.

She showered and lay in bed, intending to sleep. She had an important meeting tomorrow and needed to rest, but she couldn’t sleep.

Tossing and turning repeatedly, sleep remained elusive.

Every time she closed her eyes, that girl’s clear voice would inexplicably echo in her mind.

— Miss Miki, I want to marry you! QAQ

In her twenty-something years, Miki had heard all kinds of strange internal monologues—plenty of men lusting after her, and enough cheesy musings to fill a dozen romance novels.

Miki usually brushed them off without a second thought, too impatient to listen and wishing they’d just vanish.

But… this was the first time she’d heard such a confession from a girl.

Why would she want to marry me?!

Miki sat up in bed, confused.

The heiress’s room had monitors displaying live feeds from all over the mansion. She suddenly remembered the two girls going to dinner and instinctively clicked on the dining room feed.

Soon, Miki spotted the girl.

The monitor clearly showed the girl’s dimples, round and cheerful, making Miki want to poke them.

They chatted animatedly while eating.

“Shijie, did you really fall in love at first sight?”

The girl’s cheeks were puffed out with food as she nodded vigorously.

“Why? Just because she’s beautiful?”

The girl nodded, then shook her head, saying in a serious tone: “It’s hard to describe, but when I saw her… I felt this sense of familiarity. Maybe we knew each other in a past life…”

“You’re so cheesy!”

Despite the ordinary scene, Miki watched intently.

After a while, she narrowed her eyes, switched off the monitor, and pursed her lips.

Liar.

Didn’t she say she couldn’t eat because she was thinking about me?

Then why did she eat THREE BOWLS of noodles without stopping?!
