Chapter 140
AU: The Heiress and The Bodyguard Part 6
The falling chandelier wasn’t an accident. Within half a day, the truth was uncovered.
Someone had tampered with the fixture in advance, ensuring it would detach from the wall at just the right moment. For insiders, the conference schedule was no secret, making it easy for the perpetrator to plan their move.
Whether the goal was disrupting the meeting or something else didn’t matter – what mattered was Miss Miki’s had narrowly avoided injury.
The assistant placed the investigation report on Miki’s desk, cautiously asking: “How should we handle those responsible?”
Miki glanced at the name on the report.
It was a high- ranking executive, and she had a good idea who was behind them – just one of her many jealous cousins.
In just a few days, two major conglomerates were co-hosting an event, where a significant announcement would be made: their upcoming collaboration across multiple industries.
And Miki was the designated spokesperson for their side.
After the event, her leadership position would become even more unshakable.
At this crucial moment, many were desperate, countless hoping for her downfall. That was why they had hired outside bodyguards.
Miki said simply: “Take care of it.”
The assistant masked her shock well, but her trembling inner voice betrayed her fear.
— Never cross Miss Miki…
She bowed her head and left.
Miki ignored this, as if she hadn’t heard. She just rubbed her temples. Her naturally frail constitution, coupled with the recent relentless work, left her feeling exhausted.
Another attempt on her life.
She’d lost count of how many times this had happened. The last time was at a party, where someone had attacked her, only for a man to throw himself in front of the bullet meant for her.
His unwavering gaze, his selfless protection—to others, it had seemed like a scene from a romantic drama.
But Miki had heard his thoughts.
— I arranged this whole act carefully, surely this will win over Miss Miki.
To everyone’s shock and confusion, Miki smiled and quietly told her assistant: “Throw him into the sea and feed him to the fish.”
Another self-serving hypocrite.
Disgusting.
In contrast, that dimpled girl with her constant smile had eyes clear as spring water, thoughts so simple they were obvious even without trying to listen.
Miki glanced toward the corner of the room.
The girl sat stiffly upright, still wearing her sunglasses, but her gaze kept sneaking over to Miki.
Miki maintained her composure.
But secretly suppressed a smile.
Wakako, meanwhile, remained blissfully unaware. While others thought her injuries were serious, she barely gave them a second thought. After just half a day of rest, she was back at work.
Her ruined clothes had been replaced with a new suit, the tailored fabric covered the bandaged leg completely, leaving no trace of her injury.
Once again, she looked every bit the part of a bodyguard.
Still, Lin Lin couldn’t help but worry, mouthing silently, “Are you sure you don’t need more rest?”
Wakako gave a tiny headshake.
Her eyes, hidden behind sunglasses, were fixed on Miss Miki.
“Love conquers all pain,” she said. “So I need to be near Miss Miki to heal faster.”
Lin Lin was speechless.
Sometimes, she really wanted to call the police and have this lovesick fool arrested.
And it’s not even a relationship—it’s a one-sided crush, nowhere near mutual!
Lip-reading during work hours was incredibly convenient. Lin Lin asked incredulously: “Fine, but watching her from your balcony at night is one thing, but staring all day at work too? Don’t you ever get tired?”
Wakako, for her part, found Lin Lin’s perspective equally baffling.
“How could watching someone you like ever be tiring?” she thought. “Every moment feels like pure happiness.”
— Even just watching her from a distance makes me happy.
— Miss Miki… Did she not sleep well last night? Was she scared by the chandelier incident? Would hugging her make her feel better?
— No, what am I thinking? She would never agree to that! Stop it, Wakako, don’t get your hopes up!
— But it’s not illegal to imagine…
— If only I could hug her, just once. And then maybe lower my head slightly… Wait, no! Stop it! How can I imagine kissing Miss Miki? That’s impossible! Even if her lips look so soft and sweet… No, stop! I’m beyond saving!
— Just one more little fantasy…
— Ahhh enough! No more! Even if her hands are so beautiful, I can’t imagine her hand tracing my face, down to my lips, and then lower…
— No! I absolutely cannot imagine what those hands would do after unbuttoning my shirt! I can’t imagine her slapping my face, and then lower… Ahhh! No! Stop! I can’t taint Miss Miki with my dirty thoughts!
She lowered her head, hiding her flushed face.
So Wakako didn’t notice Miss Miki’s smile gradually disappearing.
After the assistant left, Miki started a remote video conference.
In the corner, Wakako’s endless monologue continued, mostly about her unrequited love.
Praising Miki’s every move, describing her as elegant and captivating, unique in all the world.
Miki was getting used to these compliments.
But… her hands?
Miki glanced down at her hands. Pampered since childhood, her fingers were slender and white, delicate as spring onions. Undeniably, they were beautiful.
Caressing from cheeks to lips, then lower?
Slapping her face, and then her chest?
What those hands would do after unbuttoning her shirt?
For a moment Miki felt confused – honestly, she’d never considered what she might do with another woman. Men were completely out of the question.
But she wasn’t stupid. After some thought, she understood. A blush of anger crept up her cheeks.
Was Wakako fantasizing about… touching her… intimately? In the way that only women could?
The more Miki looked at her hands, the more her thoughts strayed. She couldn’t help but imagine ripping open Wakako’s shirt.
She was losing her mind. Clearly, she shouldn’t let this overly imaginative girl sit beside her during meetings, who knew what might happen.
She was about to tell Wakako and Lin Lin to leave.
Her private office was a secure suite. If anything happened, the bodyguards could easily rush in from the outer room.
But…
— I love watching Miss Miki. I just want to keep looking at her… Hehe…
Wakako’s supposedly hidden stares and silly smiles were completely obvious to others.
Miki couldn’t help but think of a German Shepherd.
Agile and powerful, yet incredibly loyal and obedient, following their master’s every command. That’s why they were often chosen as police dogs.
The more Miki observed Wakako, the more she resembled a German Shepherd in her mind.
Soft fur, always panting with her tongue out, obediently staying put when not called. But the moment her name was spoken, she’d sprint over at full speed.
Just like now. Miki pressed the mute button on her computer and called out, “Wakako.”
The girl shot up instantly: “Yes, Miss?”
Her eyes shone like stars.
So dumb.
Miki hesitated for a moment but ultimately couldn’t bring herself to send her away. “Water.”
Wakako rushed to refill Miki’s glass, completing the task within seconds, efficient and thoroughly professional.
— Hehe, so close to Miss Miki again. I’m so happy.
She wasn’t intentionally peeking at Miki’s computer screen, but as she poured the water, her gaze inevitably fell on the video conference interface. And with her sharp eyesight, she could easily see everything.
There weren’t many participants. A few names caught Wakako’s eye: Miss Ning, Miss Chu, and Miss Han.
Miss Ning was cool and quiet, emotionally distant; Miss Chu had delicate features with a unique sharpness; Miss Han was vibrantly beautiful, charming and passionate.
How wonderful, Wakako thought enviously.
She didn’t know who these people were, but to be in a meeting with Miss Miki, they must be important figures.
The camera briefly caught Wakako’s image, projecting it onto the screen.
As she looked up, she met Miss Miss Han’s gaze.
Either from good mood or natural friendliness, while discussing some materials, she lazily raised an eyebrow and smiled at Wakako.
Wakako blinked, admiring her.
— Wow… Miss Han is so confident and self-assured, but she never feels intimidating. She’s just mesmerizing… so beautiful…
Before she could finish the thought, a cold voice interrupted.
Miki pressed the mute button again.
“Leave,” she said calmly.
Wakako froze: “Huh? But the assistant said we should stay close to you, just in case something happens again—”
Miki just repeated: “Leave.”
Her beautiful hands, the subject of Wakako’s recent fantasies, clenched subtly, betraying her displeasure.
Although confused, Wakako obeyed.
Did I do something to upset Miss Miki? I just poured her some water. I didn’t do anything else.
It must be a difficult meeting to make Miss Miki so upset. She works so hard.
Wakako thought this as she and Lin Lin quietly exited the room, waiting patiently outside.
Miki watched that completely oblivious retreating figure before returning her gaze to the screen.
In the video conference, Miss Han was speaking. She had a naturally flamboyant personality, even when discussing business matters.
Usually, Miki had no opinion about this, but today it inexplicably annoyed her.
Who acts like a strutting peacock during business talks?
“Pardon me for interrupting,” she said into the microphone. “Please maintain a professional and serious attitude during meetings, thank you.”
On the other side of the ocean, Miss Han blinked in surprise.
She paused, puzzled: “Did I offend you?”
Miki replied coldly: “No, just a friendly reminder.”
Miss Han: …
What just happened?
***
Even someone as slow as Wakako could sense that Miss Miki was in a foul mood all day.
That afternoon, during a report from senior executives, Miki hadn’t said much, but her icy gaze made everyone tremble, afraid to misspeak even a single word.
What could have happened to upset her so much?
Wakako was slightly worried.
Although she had previously found Miki’s cold demeanor attractive, now that she was witnessing it firsthand, she wished for Miki to smile.
A business dinner was scheduled that evening, requiring them to travel from the headquarters. Wakako and Lin Lin would, of course, accompany her.
Just as they were preparing to head downstairs, Lin Lin suddenly received a call from the assistant requesting help with something, leaving Wakako and Miki alone in the elevator.
Wakako fought to keep her gaze from lingering on Miki.
For this dinner, Miki had changed into a white evening gown.
The soft fabric draped elegantly, accentuating her slender waist, her back exposed, revealing smooth, white skin.
With makeup, her lips were a vibrant red, adding a touch of glamour to her usual cool demeanor.
The insurmountable gap between them seemed, for a moment, less extreme.
Wakako barely dared look, her heart pounding, a blush creeping up her neck. She wished she could disappear.
But even looking down, she noticed the delicate high heels, the smooth arch of pale feet, and above, the edge of the dress revealing…
— What would it feel like if she stepped on me?
Wakako was startled by her own thought.
With Miss Miki standing right there, so close, having such thoughts made her increasingly flustered. Her heart threatened to leap from her chest – she knew she shouldn’t, yet couldn’t help falling deeper.
The elevator continued descending.
Suddenly, Miki asked, “Do I look good tonight?”
Wakako froze.
She saw Miki turn, her heels clicking crisply against the floor. Her black hair cascaded down, setting off the pure white of her dress, her lips gleaming like red rubies.
Wakako had completely lost the ability to think. The only thing she managed to say was, “Y-yes… beautiful.”
How could there be any other answer?
Miki’s expression didn’t change.
She just asked:
“Compared to Miss Han you saw earlier?”
