Chapter 102: Return to the Mortal World

Luo Jinxiao, unsure of what had happened, assumed Qu Weiyin had been injured inside the diagram. She quickly examined her, but found no wounds.

Relieved, she gently patted Qu Weiyin’s back.

Meanwhile, Yu Gui rolled heavily to the ground, his thin body nearly falling apart. He struggled, glaring at Luo Jinxiao and Qu Weiyin with eyes full of hatred.

“Qu Weiyin!” he roared, his voice raspy and choked with blood.

“Silence!” Luo Jinxiao swung her sword, forcing him to raise his hand in defense. He doubled over, coughing up a mouthful of black phlegm.

Black smoke erupted from the ground, shielding him before swirling around him, lifting him into the air. Yu Gui slowly rose, his body ravaged and frail, like a flickering candle on the verge of being extinguished.

“You lied to me! You tricked me!” he shrieked, his pale eyes filled with despair.

Qu Weiyin stepped forward, shielding Luo Jinxiao with her body. Her phoenix eyes were sharp and cold, and the Crescent Star Sword hummed as it rose from the ground, hovering before her.

Hordes of demonic creatures swarmed from the walls, and Yu Gui let out an ear-piercing scream. “Do you think destroying the Netherworld Diagram means you’ve won?”

“Qu Weiyin, you fool! You can’t even see who’s truly loyal to you! Have you forgotten what the righteous path did to you? You’re like a dog, wagging your tail even after being beaten!”

“You’ll never escape their prejudice against demons! Look, even after all this, you’re still a demon, you’ll never be one of them! You’ll always be a thorn in their side!”

Qu Weiyin listened with downcast eyes, then suddenly looked up, her gaze sharp as needles.

The Crescent Star Sword erupted in a blinding golden light, scattering shards of light like golden leaves amidst the black smoke. Any demonic creature touched by the light vanished instantly.

Luo Jinxiao looked at Qu Weiyin, taking a step forward before hesitating.

Qu Weiyin let out a bitter laugh. “So what? Whether I’m an immortal or a demon, I am who I am. Who are you to decide for me?”

“I hate the injustice of fate, and I hate the so-called righteous path, but that doesn’t mean I’ll let that hatred turn me into a madman like you.”

Yu Gui howled, the black smoke solidifying into projectiles that shot towards them. Luo Jinxiao effortlessly deflected them all. Finally, drained of all his strength, he collapsed to the ground, his eyes filled with a crazed despair.

Qu Weiyin looked at him with a flicker of pity.

She closed her eyes, and the Crescent Star Sword transformed into a fiery arrow, blazing with heat and golden light, as if to pierce the towering demon palace.

The demon palace suddenly exploded, collapsing from the middle. Demon-like creatures wailed and surged from all directions, chilling to hear. Luo Jinxiao watched as Yu Gui’s body was torn in half by the flames.

His ash-covered eyes remained fixed on Qu Weiyin, his lips silently mouthing the words “Demon Lord.”

Until he was reduced to ashes.

His demise triggered a violent tremor that shook the very foundations of the land. Demonic energy surged outwards, and within a hundred-meter radius, vengeful spirits wailed and clawed their way out from every crevice, converging on Qu Weiyin.

These were the tormented souls left behind by those who had been sacrificed to fuel the Netherworld Diagram.

They were countless, overwhelming, a horrifying testament to the unspeakable evils that had been committed in this land.

Luo Jinxiao quickly grabbed Qu Weiyin’s hand and retreated, then leaped into the air. A blinding white light blocked the path of the vengeful spirits. The Demon Palace teetered on the brink of collapse, the place where Qu Weiyin had lived for a thousand years about to be reduced to rubble.

The two figures fled, their robes billowing and intertwining. Under the blood-red sky, Luo Jinxiao summoned Qiongqi, who swooped down and caught them in her powerful grip.

Luo Jinxiao glanced at Qu Weiyin and saw that she had closed her eyes, unwilling to look at the horrifying faces of the vengeful spirits. Her heart ached, and she reached out to cover Qu Weiyin’s eyes.

Qiongqi carried them away, her golden body transforming into a whirlwind that propelled them towards the distant horizon, escaping the demon realm.

As they emerged from the darkness into the light, the fresh air filled their lungs. Qiongqi roared with joy, soaring upwards in a graceful arc.

The warm summer wind ruffled her golden fur, and the clean air of the mortal realm enveloped them. Luo Jinxiao took a deep breath, trying to cleanse her senses of the lingering stench of blood.

“We’re out, we’re safe!” she said with a smile, removing her hand from Qu Weiyin’s eyes. But when she saw that Qu Weiyin’s eyes remained closed, her heart skipped a beat. “Junior Shishu? Weiyin?”

Qu Weiyin seemed to awaken from a trance. She looked at Luo Jinxiao, her eyes filled with unreadable emotions. A faint smile touched her lips, but it didn’t reach her eyes.

Escaping the demon realm and defeating Yu Gui didn’t seem to bring her much joy.

Luo Jinxiao’s smile faded, and she nervously tugged at Qu Weiyin’s sleeve, asking softly, “What’s wrong?”

“Did something happen inside the Netherworld Diagram?”

Qu Weiyin simply shook her head, then curled her fingers around Luo Jinxiao’s hand, her phoenix eyes welling up with tears in the warm summer breeze.

She whispered, “Jinxiao, in our past life, did I kill you?”

Luo Jinxiao was taken aback by the question, unsure how to respond.

Just as she opened her mouth to speak, Qu Weiyin interrupted, cutting her off. “Don’t lie to me. If you lie, I’ll leave right now.”

Luo Jinxiao nearly bit her tongue, scratching her head with a troubled expression.

“Fine, you don’t have to say it. I saw it. I thought perhaps it was an illusion conjured by the Netherworld Diagram to break my spirit, but now it seems… it was most likely true.”

Tears streamed down her face, carried away by the warm wind, their destination unknown.

Luo Jinxiao was speechless. No matter how eloquent she usually was, seeing Qu Weiyin cry rendered her incapable of uttering a single word.

“I don’t know what to do anymore, Jinxiao,” Qu Weiyin sighed deeply, staring at her hands, her eyes filled with conflict.

“What do you mean, what to do?” Luo Jinxiao asked urgently, gripping Qu Weiyin’s hands and forcing her to look at her. “You didn’t do it intentionally. I’ve always been indifferent towards life and death. In my previous previous life, I even stabbed myself! It doesn’t bother me, Junior Shishu. Just pretend it never happened, okay?”

Qu Weiyin remained silent, refusing to meet Luo Jinxiao’s gaze.

“I hid it from you because I was afraid you would blame yourself,” Luo Jinxiao said, her face crumpling as she nuzzled against Qu Weiyin’s shoulder, forcing her to look up.

Qu Weiyin sniffled softly and leaned into Luo Jinxiao’s embrace.

Such a great disturbance in the demon realm couldn’t go unnoticed. The demons that were once everywhere vanished overnight, replaced by numerous unpurified vengeful spirits descending into the world.

However, for cultivators, dealing with vengeful spirits was a relatively simple task.

Led by the Immortal Realm, various sects descended upon Luyang Province. The vast expanse was quickly overrun by cultivators, who were said to be secretly discussing strategies to eradicate the demon race and purge internal threats.

Unaware of these developments in the mortal realm, Luo Jinxiao and Qu Weiyin had just escaped the demon realm and were unsure where to go. They decided to settle temporarily in a sparsely populated town near Luyang Province.

This was where Tang Lan’er, who had been carried out of the demon realm in Qiongqi’s mouth, proved useful. As the esteemed Young Sect Leader, she owned a secluded estate in the area, gifted to her by her father. It provided ample space and ensured that Qu Weiyin’s demonic appearance wouldn’t be exposed to prying eyes.

The town was called Dongyang Town, named after its location east of Luyang Province. It was small and sparsely populated, inhabited mostly by mortals, with few cultivators passing through. As a result, it was remarkably peaceful.

Exhausted from their ordeal, they entered the estate in silence, seeking rest. Tang Lan’er, particularly shaken by the encounter with demons, retreated to her room in tears.

Qu Weiyin, her spirits low, also sought solitude, leaving Luo Jinxiao and Qiongqi alone in the courtyard.

“Why don’t we go out for a walk? We might find something to buy that could cheer her up,” Luo Jinxiao suggested.

Qiongqi nodded solemnly and said, “Cow.”

“We’re not buying a cow. We’ll buy some pastries. I remember a street snack called Dragon’s Beard Candy. I wonder if they have it here.”

Luo Jinxiao dragged Qiongqi through the streets. Despite its small size, the town had everything one could need. Numerous shops lined the streets, and before the demonic invasion, it must have been a bustling and prosperous place.

As they walked, Luo Jinxiao sighed. “How should I comfort Junior Shishu? She’s always been so sensitive and prone to overthinking. Now that she knows the truth, she’s probably tearing herself apart.”

“If she were more selfish, she wouldn’t be so conflicted. But she’s too kind and always puts others first, which makes her prone to doubt and despair.”

“In times like these, I wish she were a truly wicked person,” Luo Jinxiao lamented.

Listening to this, Qiongqi lowered her head, biting her pink lips. Her big eyes drooped as she let out a sandy burp.

After a long walk, Luo Jinxiao finally found the Dragon’s Beard Candy she had been searching for. She also bought half a cow for Qiongqi to carry, and they returned home as the setting sun painted the sky with molten gold.

The courtyard was silent when they arrived. Assuming Qu Weiyin was asleep, Luo Jinxiao sent Qiongqi away and approached Qu Weiyin’s room.

Just as she stopped at the door, she felt a push on her lower back. Simultaneously, the door swung open, and she stumbled inside.

She came face to face with Qu Weiyin, who sat quietly in a chair with her long hair loose. A wooden comb lay beside her, suggesting she had been sitting there motionless since entering the room.

Qu Weiyin slowly raised her head, her gaze softening as a gentle smile touched her lips. “You’re back,” she murmured.

Luo Jinxiao knew she must have been deep in thought for a long time. Feeling a surge of affection, she closed the door with a cheerful click and bounced over to Qu Weiyin, placing the Dragon’s Beard Candy on the table with a beaming smile.

“What’s this?” Qu Weiyin asked.

“It’s a mortal snack. You’ve always lived in the mountains, so you must have never tried it.” Luo Jinxiao plucked a piece from the paper wrapping and held it to Qu Weiyin’s lips.

Qu Weiyin eyed the white, powdery pastry with slight apprehension. “Is it sweet?” she asked cautiously.

“Very sweet, try it.” Luo Jinxiao’s eyes sparkled with anticipation, as if she were offering a precious treasure.

Qu Weiyin, unable to refuse, parted her lips and took a bite. However, the candy was sticky and large, and she struggled to chew it, her cheeks puffing out adorably.

Luo Jinxiao had never seen the usually elegant Qu Weiyin eat like this before, and she couldn’t help but chuckle. Qu Weiyin, both embarrassed and exasperated, glared at her playfully.

As Luo Jinxiao watched, she suddenly leaned forward. Her tongue darted out to catch a stray bit of candy from the corner of Qu Weiyin’s mouth, her lips brushing against Qu Weiyin’s in the process.

Qu Weiyin tried to speak, but her mouth was full, and she could only sputter in frustration.

“It really is very sweet, Junior Shishu,” Luo Jinxiao said with a nod.
