Chapter 13: Embrace

Qu Weiyin was gritting her teeth, battling against Qiongqi, when Luo Jinxiao’s words shattered her concentration. In that brief moment of distraction, the young woman she had been protecting suddenly grabbed her arm, pulling her out of Qiongqi’s attack range.

The girl’s hand was slender and icy, cold as if it held shards of ice. She flashed in front of Qu Weiyin, her palm gathering a silvery-white light. The wind whipped her hair, freezing the sweat that clung to the strands. Her black hair shimmered as if inlaid with silver, dazzlingly beautiful.

Qiongqi’s blood-red eyes seemed to dim slightly. It shrank back with a low growl. As it roared again, Luo Jinxiao, fearing for Qu Weiyin’s safety, pushed her away with her left hand and faced Qiongqi head-on with her right. The light from her palm collided with the torrent of Qiongqi’s breath, creating a massive shockwave like a crashing wave. The impact shook the night pearls from the ceiling, sending them raining down with a clatter.

It had been a long time since Luo Jinxiao had experienced the feeling of wielding such powerful spiritual energy. A thrill shot through her, yet a faint worry lingered in her heart. This was, after all, a forbidden technique she had never used before. If not for the dire circumstances, she would never have resorted to such a method.

So this was what it felt like to unleash the full potential of her spiritual power. Luo Jinxiao moved with ease between Qiongqi’s four claws, attempting to bind it with her energy.

Qu Weiyin stared at her, momentarily stunned. As she snapped out of her daze, she dashed forward. The Crescent Star Sword shot into the air, swiftly positioning itself in front of Luo Jinxiao, shielding her from a portion of the attack.

The walls of the hall began to crack. The wind whipped through the room, sending lighter objects flying. Even several redwood chairs with gold trim were lifted into the air, hurtling towards Luo Jinxiao.

This is bad! Luo Jinxiao thought, leaping into the air with a powerful kick. Her light blue robes danced and swirled around her in the wind.

Qu Weiyin’s heart tightened as she saw Luo Jinxiao nearly get hit. She frowned, ready to step in.

In a flash, Luo Jinxiao grabbed the Crescent Star Sword and, with a swift motion, sliced the oncoming chair in half. The pieces shattered and scattered.

Qu Weiyin was completely shocked. The Crescent Star Sword was an ancient artifact; ordinary people couldn’t even touch it, yet Luo Jinxiao had casually lifted and used it as if it were a simple broom.

Unable to withstand the combined might of the two women, Qiongqi quickly exhausted itself. Its previous imposing demeanor vanished entirely. It began to back away, whimpering softly. Its eyes, once wide and ferocious, now drooped, making it look a giant, pitiful dog.

Luo Jinxiao was also nearing her limit. The forbidden technique, while powerful, consumed a tremendous amount of spiritual energy in a short time. With a final burst of strength, she deflected the last of Qiongqi’s foul breath and landed steadily on the ground.

Or rather, she attempted to land steadily. Her legs gave way, forcing her to one knee. A wave of nausea surged through her, and she fought the urge to vomit.

Qu Weiyin noticed her discomfort and rushed to her side. She reached out to help her up but stopped short of touching her. Instead, she sheathed her sword and asked calmly, “Are you alright?”

“I’m fine.” Luo Jinxiao gritted her teeth, forcing a bright smile. She couldn’t let Qu Weiyin see her weakness.

Qiongqi had retracted its wings and was now cowering, its large furry paws covering its face as if it couldnโ€™t bear to look at Luo Jinxiao.

Luo Jinxiao lifted her head, her expression suddenly shifting. “Watch out!” she shouted, her body shooting forward like an arrow. She slammed into Qu Weiyin, pushing her out the door.

Qu Weiyin could have dodged, but Luo Jinxiao’s sudden push sent them both tumbling out. Thankfully, the Crescent Star Sword, acting on its own to protect its master, expanded into its sheath form, cushioning their fall.

They landed with a thud on the large sword sheath. Luo Jinxiao, who had been holding onto Qu Weiyin’s shoulders, found her hands sliding down slightly in the fall.

Silence hung heavy in the air.

Qu Weiyin found herself pinned beneath Luo Jinxiao, her body tensing with irritation. For a fleeting moment, she almost unsheathed her sword and struck her down. But she restrained herself, gritting out through clenched teeth, “Get off of me!”

Luo Jinxiao, feeling the softness beneath her, blushed and quickly scrambled to her feet, hands raised as if she had committed a crime.

Qu Weiyin was a mixture of anger and exasperation. Before she could speak, a series of earth-shattering cracks split the air. Before their eyes, the Wuhui Palace, which had stood tall and proud, its peaks seemingly touching the clouds, began to crumble. Its supporting pillars snapped one after another, and with a final, deafening roar, the entire palace collapsed into a heap of rubble.

Everyone present was completely stunned. The elders, who had rushed to the scene after hearing the commotion, stared in disbelief. A few of the older ones nearly fainted from shock.

Luo Jinxiao turned to look at the destruction she had caused, swallowing hard. What now? Others might just make a mess, but she had managed to tear down the entire palace.

Among the debris, a pile of rubble shifted, and a furry head poked out. The creature shook the dust from its fur, stuck out its tongue, and began to groom itself.

“Is that… a giant cat?” Elder He, looking like he might collapse, finally managed to speak.

“No, it’s a Qiongqi,” someone informed him.

Elder He let out a long, drawn-out burp and promptly fainted.

Luo Jinxiao had to stifle a laugh. Suddenly, the world around her went dark. She stumbled forward, collapsing into a pair of fragrant and welcoming arms.

The person holding her startled, instinctively stepping back. But then, they gently bent down, encircling her slender waist with their arms, holding her securely.

As darkness enveloped her, Luo Jinxiao instinctively clung to the person holding her, nuzzling them gently before drifting off to sleep.

She slept for five long days.

Luo Jinxiao dreamt countless dreams, some nightmarish, others peaceful. Oblivious to her unconscious state, she dreamt of her past and present life, a jumbled mess of memories. In one dream, a figure resembling the King of Hell appeared, pointing at her forehead and declaring in a stern voice, “This is your fate.”

Then, the King of Hell transformed into Qu Weiyin, one hand gripping a blood-soaked sword, the other reaching for out, her eyes red with murderous intent.

The sight of Qu Weiyin startled her awake. She opened her eyes to a red silk curtain, the air thick with the fragrance of incense wafting from a burner beside her pillow.

The room was tastefully decorated, with flowers placed everywhere, giving it a feminine touch.

Such a refreshing room must belong to a kind, gentle, and virtuous young woman, Luo Jinxiao thought to herself as she slowly sat up, stretching her stiff limbs.

The door creaked open, and the “kind, gentle, and virtuous young woman” walked in. With a loud clang, she dropped a washbasin onto the table and said coldly, “Get up and bathe yourself.”

Startled, Luo Jinxiao stared at Qu Weiyin, wondering if she was still dreaming.

“You’ve been lying there for five days. Elder Liu said if you didn’t wake up today, we’d be preparing your funeral in two days,” Qu Weiyin said, her tone almost regretful. She tossed a few steamed buns onto the table. “After all this time, you still haven’t learned to abstain from food.”

Luo Jinxiao didn’t know what to say. She seemed to have grown accustomed to Qu Weiyin’s manner of speaking and felt oddly calm. She even felt a little pleased, thinking that since she was in the Demon Lord’s room, didn’t that mean Qu Weiyin had been the one caring for her all this time?

Who would have thought that even the notorious Demon Lord could take care of someone? Could it be that she had softened?

But before she could savor the thought, a subtle change came over the Demon Lord. The icy aura she exuded moments ago began to melt away as she turned toward the corner of the room. A soft, loving smile graced her lips when she picked up a basket filled with meat buns. When she spoke, her voice was as gentle as a summer breeze.

“Come, it’s time to eat,” she said tenderly.

In the corner, Qiongqi busied itself cleaning its face with its massive paws. It cast a disdainful glance at Qu Weiyin before turning away, presenting her with its furry backside.

The bit of secret joy Luo Jinxiao felt vanished without a trace.

No wonder the Demon Lord took care of her. It turns out it wasnโ€™t because she had softened towards her, but because she was interested in her Qiongqi!
