Chapter 15: Little Sweetie

Luo Jinxiao was rendered speechless by her scolding and could only shut her mouth, muttering inwardly, Why does this Demon Lord act like she’s swallowed a firecracker every day, always getting angry at the slightest provocation?

At this moment, the sword spirit reappeared, struggling to hold a book in her hands. The book, originally the size of a palm, appeared as heavy as a mountain in her grasp.

“Here,” the sword spirit grunted, tossing the book onto Luo Jinxiao’s face.

Luo Jinxiao deftly caught it, found the page describing the forbidden technique, and respectfully handed it to Qu Weiyin.

Qu Weiyin took it and flipped through a few pages before stopping, her fingertip twitching. The book burst into flames, turning to ash.

“Such misleading content,” she muttered, frowning and brushing the ash off her clothes with an air of displeasure.

Luo Jinxiao kept her head lowered, not daring to speak.

“Your friend has arrived,” Qu Weiyin said, her phoenix eyes glancing towards the window before turning back to Luo Jinxiao. “You’ve made quite a few friends in just a few days.”

Friend? Could it be Lu Fanzhi? How did she find this place? Luo Jinxiao suddenly remembered that she had been unconscious for days and had no idea what had happened in the outside world. She gathered her courage and blinked at Qu Weiyin.

Qu Weiyin simply looked at her indifferently, ignoring her completely.

Luo Jinxiao inched closer, forcing a smile that showed eight teeth. “Junior Shishu, I’ve been asleep for five whole days…”

“If you have something to ask, be quick about it.” Qu Weiyin slowly sat down, her fingers delicately pinching the air, summoning a steaming cup of tea.

“It’s just… about the Wuhui Palace… I won’t have to compensate for it, will I?” Luo Jinxiao’s smile gradually turned bitter.

Qu Weiyin had not expected her to be worried about this. She almost choked on her tea, setting down the cup and looking Luo Jinxiao up and down. “Do you have any silver?”

Luo Jinxiao shook her head hastily.

“Then what are you afraid of? At worst, you can pay with your life. Wuhui Palace has stood for a hundred years; your little life in exchange for it isn’t a bad deal.”

Luo Jinxiao’s heart tightened, her eyes widening like a startled deer in Qu Weiyin’s eyes.

Qu Weiyin wanted to laugh, her lips twitching, but she quickly schooled her expression back to indifference. “The elders have sentenced you to chop firewood in the back mountains. You are not to return to the Wuhui Sect until you have chopped a year’s worth.”

“A year’s worth? And I can’t use my spiritual power?” This time, Luo Jinxiao couldn’t force a smile. It was just summoning a Qiongqi, was heaven trying to kill her?

“They’ve been circling below for a while now. Do you want to go down, or should they come up?” Qu Weiyin tilted her head slightly towards the window, lifting her chin subtly.

Luo Jinxiao’s face fell. Before she could speak, Qu Weiyin nodded and casually waved her hand. A gust of wind swept through the room, sending two figures tumbling through the window. One crashed to the floor, while the other, seemingly with higher cultivation, managed to regain her balance after stumbling.

“Sister!” the girl who had managed to stand cried, rushing towards Luo Jinxiao. Still weak, Luo Jinxiao nearly fell but felt a hand steady her by the waist.

She looked towards Qu Weiyin, who seemed completely oblivious to the commotion, lazily sipping her tea.

Luo Jinxiao looked back suspiciously. The girl in front of her appeared to be about her age and even resembled her somewhat. Her lips were naturally red, her nose small and delicate, and her eyes were black as ink. However, her face lacked Luo Jinxiao’s usual smile, and her cheeks were fuller, making her appear less delicate.

Luo Jinxiao had never paid much attention to the background of this body and had no idea she had a younger sister.

“Sister, I was away for training for over a month. I had no idea you had joined the Wuhui Sect and even gotten hurt! Let me see!” The girl fussed over Luo Jinxiao, circling her and reaching out to examine her.

“She has no external injuries, only damage to her spiritual roots,” Qu Weiyin suddenly spoke, her voice as aloof and indifferent as ever.

Luo Ning jumped at the sound, quickly turning and bowing respectfully. “This disciple greets Junior Shishu Qu.”

“This disciple greets Junior Shishu Qu,” Lu Fanzhi added, finally scrambling to her feet, her clothes disheveled.

“Mm,” Qu Weiyin responded curtly, not moving from her spot.

“I’ve been worried sick these past five days. I couldn’t find you anywhere. If my master hadn’t helped me inquire about your whereabouts, I would have thought you were really dead. I skipped morning practice today and came here specifically to look for you. It just so happens that Junior Sister Luo Ning has returned from her training and came along after hearing about your situation,” Lu Fanzhi chattered, her wrinkled clothes reflecting her frantic search.

“I’m fine,” Luo Jinxiao reassured them, a genuine smile gracing her lips at their concern.

From a distance, Qu Weiyin watched without taking another sip of her tea.

“Is this a Qiongqi? I’ve never seen a ferocious beast before. But, are you really going to keep it by your side? Since ancient times, ferocious beasts have been a bad omen, creatures of bloodshed. What if you can’t suppress it…?” Lu Fanzhi’s gaze was fixed on the Qiongqi, who was now fast asleep after its meal. She seemed both curious and afraid to touch it.

“Ferocious beasts are born to devour human flesh and bones,” Qu Weiyin stated coldly, her gaze fixed on the massive creature on the bed. Her eyes narrowed, their depths unreadable, sending a chill down their spines.

Lu Fanzhi and Luo Ning exchanged nervous glances, taking a few steps back.

Luo Jinxiao’s heart tightened. She, too, was undoubtedly afraid of this Demon Lord, who reminded her of the Demon Lord from her past life. Yet, she couldn’t shake the feeling that Qu Weiyin wasn’t inherently this way.

Perhaps this viciousness was merely a facade.

As if possessed, Luo Jinxiao boldly stepped forward and grabbed the Qiongqi by the scruff of its neck, lifting with all her might. Startled from its sleep, Qiongqi whimpered pathetically, its small body dangling in midair.

Its hidden wings slowly fluttered as if pleading for mercy.

Luo Ning stared at the scene, dumbfounded. She nudged Lu Fanzhi and whispered, “Since when did my sister have such strength?”

“How would I know?” Lu Fanzhi shook her head in disbelief.

Qu Weiyin, her previous coldness momentarily forgotten, stared at Luo Jinxiao with surprise. Their eyes met, and for a moment, both held their breath.

Eventually, Qu Weiyin was the first to look away, feeling somewhat uncomfortable, and said “What are you trying to say?”

Luo Jinxiao glanced around, grabbed a plate of cold pastries from a nearby table, and tossed one into the Qiongqi’s mouth. “Although Qiongqi is a ferocious beast, it’s similar to an ordinary cat. Hold it by the scruff of its neck, and it can’t move. It may crave human flesh, but it also loves sweets.”

As if on cue, the Qiongqi smacked its lips, its pink tongue stretching out to reach for the remaining pastries in Luo Jinxiao’s hand.

Qu Weiyin paused, a warmth spreading through her heart as if something had melted, cozy like a spring day. She bit her lip, and after a while, she coldly responded, “Hmm, so what.”

“Therefore, I want to name it Little Sweetie,” Luo Jinxiao said as she set Qiongqi down, her eyes sparkling, smiling radiantly.

Luo Ning and Lu Fanzhi, who had been watching in stunned silence, nearly fainted.

Qu Weiyin coughed lightly, trying her best to maintain a neutral expression. “That sounds awful,” she murmured, a hint of helplessness in her voice.

“You’ve rested enough. Now hurry up and go chop wood.”

“Ah, can’t I start tomorrow? I just woke up, and my body is still weak. I can’t possibly chop that much firewood,” Luo Jinxiao whined, dramatically collapsing onto the Qiongqi, feigning exhaustion.

“It makes no difference whenever you do it. If Elder Liu hadn’t pleaded for leniency on your behalf, you would have been expelled immediately for using forbidden techniques,” Qu Weiyin scoffed. “If you haven’t finished chopping within five days, pack your belongings and get out of the Wuhui Sect.”

Despite her reluctance, Luo Jinxiao forced herself to get up. She trudged towards the door, then, as if pushing her luck, turned back with a pitiful expression.

“Junior Shishu, I can’t use my spiritual power. How am I supposed to get to the back mountain?” she asked, biting her lip, her dimples appearing as she pouted.

Qu Weiyin glanced at her, then quickly looked away. “What does that have to do with me?”

“But…” Luo Jinxiao, sensing that Qu Weiyin was susceptible to a softer approach, doubled down on her act of fragility.

The sight of the delicate girl, her bright, pleading eyes fixed on her, was indeed pitiful. Qu Weiyin frowned, a flicker of annoyance crossing her features, but she didn’t push Luo Jinxiao away.

“Always making trouble,” she muttered under her breath. In a flash, she grabbed Luo Jinxiao’s arm, and they vanished from the room.

When Luo Jinxiao opened her eyes again, Qu Weiyin was gone. She stood alone in a dense forest, the rustling leaves and fragrant grass filling her senses.

The lingering feeling of Qu Weiyin’s touch lingered on her arm – the cool, smooth brush of red silk, a sensation that seemed to reach into her very core.
