Chapter 22: Saving Her
The two fell into silence again, with Qu Weiyin subtly slowing her pace, no longer as hurried as before.
They soon reached the end of the mountain path. From afar, they could see the large gate made of white jade, washed sparkling clean by the rain, crystalline and translucent. Several disciples waited there, some holding umbrellas, others using Water Repelling spells, causing the rain to cascade off them like miniature waterfalls.
Qu Weiyin stopped in her tracks and suddenly glanced at Luo Jinxiao. Her gaze traveled down Luo Jinxiao’s body, lingering on her smooth, fair legs.
“Your clothes are messy,” Qu Weiyin said, frowning before looking away.
Luo Jinxiao looked down at her skirt, hanging loosely around her thighs, and her pant legs, bunched up around her ankles. It was indeed an unrefined sight. She scratched her head, then stomped her feet a few times, smoothing out her pant legs.
Qu Weiyin, looking as if she no longer wished to see her, turned her gaze towards the distant mountains without another word. A moment later, the originally misty sky cleared up, the rain gradually lessening until it finally stopped.
As the heavy rain ceased, a rainbow arched across the horizon, like a colorful ribbon spanning the sky, stretching beyond the mountains before them, its end hidden from view.
“Did you bring Qiongqi?” Qu Weiyin asked.
“Yes, I did. I thought I’d let it get some fresh air,” Luo Jinxiao replied, pulling a small tiger, about the length of her arm, from the pouch at her waist, holding it like a large cat.
Qu Weiyin’s expression nearly cracked.
Seemingly holding back with great effort, she asked, “You keep it in your pouch?”
“Yes, there’s plenty of space in here. It’s very convenient. I even put a blanket inside for it to sleep on,” Luo Jinxiao said with a smile, reaching out to stroke the Qiongqi’s fur. “Isn’t that right, Little Sweetie?”
The Qiongqi let out a soft roar and raised its furry head.
“I discovered a few days ago that it can shrink and change its form. Right now, it just hides its wings and becomes a little tiger. Eventually, it can transform into a small cat. It’ll be so cute to take around,” Luo Jinxiao said excitedly, petting it more frequently as the Qiongqi purred contentedly.
Qu Weiyin nearly clenched her fist. Through gritted teeth, she said, “Luo Jinxiao, it’s a ferocious beast, not a spirit pet!”
Startled, Luo Jinxiao took a step back.
“If you want it to be of any help to you in the future, you need to train it like a spirit beast, not treat it like a pet.”
After saying this, Qu Weiyin sighed and softened her tone. “Forget it, you’ll understand in time.”
She shook her head and turned to leave. Just then, Chang Siyu arrived, hurrying over to Qu Weiyin’s side, and the two walked away together.
“Did you hear that? You’re a ferocious beast,” Luo Jinxiao said, poking the Qiongqi while watching them leave.
Soon, everyone had gathered. To ensure their safety, Qu Weiyin, Chang Siyu, and Lu Fanzhi’s Master, Gui Jiu, had also come along as a precaution. Chang Siyu blew a whistle, summoning a grayish-blue Qingluan. Its massive body and outstretched wings were as wide as a tree.
Everyone leaped onto the Qingluan. Luo Jinxiao and Lu Fanzhi were the last to board. Luo Jinxiao glanced to the side and saw Qu Weiyin, standing at the front, wielding her sword. The crimson blade was particularly striking. Her long black hair, half tied up, flowed in the wind, her snow-white robes fluttering, and her skirt billowing.
The pale sunlight shone on Qu Weiyin’s face, making her phoenix eyes narrow slightly, revealing a hint of laziness.
Luo Jinxiao couldn’t help but stare at her, sighing inwardly. Such a beauty, to say she was an otherworldly being wouldn’t be an exaggeration. How could she possibly become a Demon Lord?
It was like watching the most beautiful flower on the highest branch wither and fall to the mud.
At that moment, Chang Siyu, who had been following behind, suddenly appeared beside Qu Weiyin, chattering away with his head lowered, his words unclear. Although Qu Weiyin appeared to be listening, her expression grew increasingly impatient.
Chang Siyu, however, continued talking as if oblivious.
Since Chang Siyu always antagonized me anyway, why not teach him a lesson? A mischievous thought crossed Luo Jinxiao’s mind. She stealthily released the Qiongqi and whispered into its ear, “Little Sweetie, go chase that man away.”
Perhaps because Luo Jinxiao often fed it treats, the Qiongqi now saw her as its provider and obeyed her every word. As soon as she finished speaking, it spread its tiny wings and flapped towards Qu Weiyin, squeezing between her and Chang Siyu, pushing him aside.
Chang Siyu frowned, about to erupt in anger, when he saw Qu Weiyin looking at the Qiongqi with a smile, reaching out to gather the fluffy little tiger into her arms.
Her red lips curved into a smile, a sight as beautiful as a field of blossoming flowers.
Luo Jinxiao had never seen her smile so freely before, and her heart skipped a beat.
After about two hours, the Qingluan finally landed. Although the journey was long, everyone looked refreshed, having chatted and joked along the way, and didn’t feel tired at all.
As soon as Luo Jinxiao landed, she looked around. She saw a completely ordinary plain, devoid of even a single blade of grass. Only a few withered shrubs rolled along the ground, blown by the wind.
This is the Upper Celestial Realm? In this wasteland?
Everyone else seemed equally puzzled. Lu Fanzhi hopped up and down, looking around. “Could it be that the Qingluan flew to the wrong place? Took us to the wrong place?” she asked Luo Jinxiao.
Luo Jinxiao didn’t answer. She walked forward a few steps, closed her eyes, and extended her spiritual power. Then, she opened her eyes and said, “This is the place. There’s a barrier here. The Upper Celestial Realm is an ancient ruin, filled with all sorts of strange things. This barrier must be here to prevent outsiders from entering.”
Lu Fanzhi nodded, her face blank with confusion.
“Move aside,” Qu Weiyin’s voice sounded from behind. Luo Jinxiao quickly stepped aside.
Qu Weiyin raised her hand, her five fingers spread out in mid-air. Pale golden spiritual energy flowed from her palm, gradually forming an arc. Suddenly, a thin film of air appeared, trembling slightly with her spiritual power.
“Gui Jiu, take them inside,” Qu Weiyin said softly.
Gui Jiu stepped forward with a faint smile. “Once inside the barrier, everyone must stay close to me to avoid danger.”
With that, he ducked and entered the opening Qu Weiyin had created. Yan Ying, being bold, was the first to follow. The other disciples, their faces filled with curiosity, followed suit, their figures disappearing one by one.
“Jinxiao, I’m so nervous! Do you think there will be ghosts inside?” Lu Fanzhi gripped Luo Jinxiao’s arm in fear. “I’m so nervous and excited at the same time!”
“A cultivator afraid of ghosts? How will you ever slay demons in the future?” Luo Jinxiao said through gritted teeth. “You have a really strong grip.”
As soon as she said this, she suddenly felt a chill behind her. She looked up and met Qu Weiyin’s cold, piercing gaze.
And within those eyes, there was also a hint of… sadness.
Luo Jinxiao froze, the rest of her words caught in her throat. She fell silent, wondering why Qu Weiyin seemed angry.
Could it be because I mentioned slaying demons? But she hasn’t succumbed to demonic cultivation yet, so why would she react so strongly to that phrase?
Luo Jinxiao was the last to enter. Her heart pounded in her chest as she passed by Qu Weiyin. As soon as she stepped through the opening, Qu Weiyin released her hold on the barrier and followed close behind.
I hope Qu Weiyin won’t attack me from behind in a fit of anger, Luo Jinxiao thought nervously.
Fortunately, Qu Weiyin did no such thing. She simply followed silently, without a word.
When the barrier vanished, a dense, pitch-black forest appeared. In the middle of the forest was a dark, sticky path that felt extremely uncomfortable to walk on.
“Don’t look around, just follow closely,” Chang Siyu’s stern voice rang out from the center of the group. Having arrived in this eerie place, no one dared to look around. They kept their eyes fixed straight ahead, their steps never straying, afraid of falling behind.
Luo Jinxiao hadn’t been to the Upper Celestial Realm in her previous life, only hearing tales of it. From its name, she had imagined a sacred and holy place, but now that she was here, it felt more like a terrifying descent into hell.
They should just rename it the Lower Realm, Luo Jinxiao thought.
In this pitch-black place, the person at the back was surely the most afraid. Thinking this, Luo Jinxiao turned her head slightly to glance at Qu Weiyin. However, before her head could even turn halfway, someone pinched the back of her neck, forcefully twisting it back.
“Don’t look around. If something happens, I won’t save you,” Qu Weiyin hissed.
So petty, Luo Jinxiao thought, pouting. She lifted her gaze and looked ahead. There was another person in the group who was just as restless, looking around curiously. He was also a new disciple, but his face seemed vaguely unfamiliar.
The way he walked was strange, his limbs stiff and unnatural, not like someone with properly functioning legs. More like…
A puppet.
Luo Jinxiao’s eyes widened, her heart pounding in her chest. She instinctively turned her head to tell Qu Weiyin, but at that moment, the ground beneath her feet suddenly gave way. A wave of weightlessness washed over her. Before Luo Jinxiao could react, she was falling.
Everything happened too fast for anyone to see clearly. In the blink of an eye, she had already fallen halfway down. Luo Jinxiao hurriedly raised her hand to summon her sword, but just then, a hand grabbed her sash, yanking her upwards.
Pale golden spiritual energy enveloped her, carrying her through the air. Looking down, Luo Jinxiao saw that she wasn’t the only one who had fallen. A gaping hole had appeared in the ground, seemingly out of nowhere. Something within the hole, like a magnet, was pulling people down.
But it seemed she wasn’t the target. The center of the collapse was right beneath Qu Weiyin’s feet.
“Junior Shishu!” Luo Jinxiao cried out, her heart leaping into her throat. But Qu Weiyin’s figure had already disappeared, swallowed by the abyss. The hole in the ground slowly began to close.
Luo Jinxiao gritted her teeth and glared at the person who had seemed like a puppet. As she suspected, he was gone. The others at the front of the group, noticing the commotion, began to gather around.
Luo Jinxiao spun in place, clenching her fists. There was no doubt that Qu Weiyin had just saved her. To just stand by and watch her die would be a betrayal of everything a cultivator stood for!
Without hesitation, while the opening still remained, she broke through Qu Weiyin’s spiritual energy and dove straight into the hole, quickly vanishing.
Screams erupted from those around her. Lu Fanzhi, seeing what had transpired, pushed through the crowd and rushed towards the edge of the pit. She lifted her leg to follow, but Gui Jiu grabbed her, pulling her back. “Lu Fanzhi, are you crazy?!” he barked.
Unable to move, Lu Fanzhi cried out, her face pale with worry, “Master, Jinxiao…”
Before she could finish her sentence, a small, slender figure darted past, leaping into the hole without a word.
“Senior Sister Luo Ning? When did she get here?” Lu Fanzhi stared after her, stunned.
“Hey!” Yan Ying lunged forward to grab her, but only managed to tear off a piece of pale yellow fabric. She threw it to the ground in frustration, cursing under her breath, “Idiots!”
The opening was closing rapidly, now only large enough for one person to pass through. Yan Ying bit her lip until it bled, then, with a final burst of determination, she pressed herself against the edge and jumped.
What a sudden development! Also is this yan yings redemption arc?
Something going on with Yan Ying and Luo Ning….? Maybe…?
