Chapter 40: Pat on The Head
“Junior Shishu, it’s me.” Luo Jinxiao held her hand, surprised by its icy coldness. She tightened her grip, hoping to warm it.
Qu Weiyin coughed a few times, finally regaining full consciousness. Her eyes landed on Luo Jinxiao’s face, and she froze.
After a moment, she collected herself, her expression carefully neutral. Withdrawing her hand, she said coldly, “Why are you here?”
Luo Jinxiao hesitated, stammering, “I came, I…”
“To persuade me?” Qu Weiyin’s voice dripped with sarcasm.
Luo Jinxiao choked on her words. I don’t know your suffering, so what right do I have to persuade you?
The oppressive aura of the Dragon Binding Whip filled the room, stealing their strength breath by breath. After only a short while, Luo Jinxiao felt a tightness in her chest. She grabbed Qu Weiyin’s arm again, pleading, “Junior Shishu, we have to find a way out. If you continue like this, aren’t you just waiting for Qu Chengzhou to finish you off?”
“The Dragon Binding Whip isn’t something you can easily escape from. This has nothing to do with you. Leave now!” Qu Weiyin pushed Luo Jinxiao away forcefully.
“My affairs are none of your concern, so why drag yourself into my hopeless situation?” Qu Weiyin spat out.
“I have my own path. Everyone has their own destiny. You’re not weak anymore, so stay away from me from now on. I don’t want to drag you down with my misfortune.”
Luo Jinxiao detected a hint of blame in her words and felt a pang of guilt. “I never meant to hide my cultivation from you. It’s just that Elder Liu instructed me…”
“I’m not blaming you,” Qu Weiyin interrupted, her tone cold and distant.
Even though Luo Jinxiao knew this was her usual demeanor, she couldn’t help but feel a chill, as if something had frozen within her.
Her lips pressed into a thin line. Determined, she pulled Qu Weiyin towards her, placing a hand on her shoulder and forcefully channeling her own spiritual energy into her, protecting her meridians.
“Stop it, Luo Jinxiao!” Qu Weiyin struggled, but she was already exhausted and could only glare at her.
“But you’ve saved me so many times. How could I just stand by and watch?” Luo Jinxiao bit her lip, tears welling up in her eyes. Her voice was soft but firm.
The silence around them was heavy. Qu Weiyin seemed moved, her gaze lingering on Luo Jinxiao’s tear-filled eyes without speaking.
She rarely experienced helplessness, but this time, it was overwhelming.
Outside the door was another world. Inside, they were isolated by the Dragon Binding Whip, unable to hear the noise beyond. Luo Jinxiao’s hand, shielding Qu Weiyin’s meridians, trembled slightly. She was only barely holding on.
“Let go,” Qu Weiyin said.
Luo Jinxiao shook her head, enduring the pain as she shielded Qu Weiyin from the whip’s effects.
“Junior Shishu, I won’t try to persuade you. You have your reasons,” she said.
“But I can’t just ignore this.” Luo Jinxiao moved a little closer, using her own spiritual energy to create a barrier around them. “You… you’re the only person who has ever been so good to me.”
Qu Weiyin looked at Luo Jinxiao’s face, so close to her own. The girl’s delicate lips trembled slightly, her eyes reflecting the candlelight, shimmering like water. Her warm breath brushed against her forehead, sending a strange tingling sensation through her.
“Naive,” Qu Weiyin muttered, shaking her head, but a sudden wave of emotion overwhelmed her.
She stared at Luo Jinxiao for a long moment, then, using the floor for support, she slowly pushed herself up, refusing Luo Jinxiao’s outstretched hand.
“I’ll get you out of here,” she said.
Luo Jinxiao panicked. She stood up and followed, asking urgently, “What are you going to do?”
“He wants to be the head of the family, so I’ll let him have it,” Qu Weiyin said casually. But Luo Jinxiao knew that making such a decision must be incredibly difficult for her.
“Revenge can wait. It doesn’t have to be now,” Qu Weiyin said, shaking her head. Surprisingly, this time, there was no hint of demonic energy in her.
Perhaps living for two thousand more years has taught her some diplomacy? Luo Jinxiao wondered. Or maybe it’s something else…
Watching Qu Weiyin walk past the family precepts and towards the main gate, Luo Jinxiao felt a surge of confusion. She closed her eyes, trying to calm her racing thoughts. There has to be another way. Qu Weiyin shouldn’t have to bow her head to her enemy. She shouldn’t have to apologize.
A knock sounded at the door, followed by Qu Weiyin’s hoarse voice. “Open the door.”
Qu Chengzhou’s righteous voice boomed from outside. “Weiyin, openly disrespecting your elders and speaking such nonsense—do you even realize your mistake?”
Qu Weiyin’s nails dug into her palms. She took a deep breath before replying, “Weiyin… acknowledges her mistake.”
Her voice was steady and firm. When she opened her hand, specks of blood were visible, which pained Luo Jinxiao to see.
The door swung open, and sunlight poured onto Qu Weiyin’s face. She squinted, gazing up at the clear blue sky. The crowd waiting outside was momentarily dazzled, as if she had illuminated the entire courtyard.
“If you had realized this sooner, things wouldn’t have come to this!” another elder, with white hair and a long beard, said, rapping his cane on the ground.
Qu Weiyin walked out with steady steps, showing no signs of her previous weakness. Those who met her gaze felt a shiver of fear.
A triumphant smile played on Qu Chengzhou’s lips as he watched her approach. He nodded in satisfaction and said benevolently, “It’s good that you’ve realized your mistake. Remember this lesson and never repeat it.”
“Since everyone is in agreement, from now on, the head of our family shall be Qu Chengzhou,” the white-bearded elder announced in a slow, raspy voice.
A round of applause erupted from the crowd, though it was somewhat sparse. Some were genuinely supportive, while others shook their heads, not daring to voice their dissent.
Although Qu Chengzhou had been managing the family affairs for years, everyone knew he had usurped Qu Weiyin’s rightful place.
But these were just whispers in the dark. No one dared to speak openly against him. After all, in terms of capability, Qu Chengzhou was undeniably the strongest in the family.
No one wanted to make an enemy of him.
And so, led by the elder, everyone bowed their heads and acknowledged him as the head of the family. Only Qu Weiyin remained standing upright, unmoving.
“Weiyin, don’t be childish. Let go of your anger,” Qu Chengzhou chided, feigning helplessness.
“Qu Weiyin! The head of the family and the elders are present. How can you be so disrespectful?!” the elder roared.
Qu Weiyin took a deep breath and reluctantly lowered her head to speak. But just then, Luo Jinxiao darted out from the room and grabbed her wrist. Caught off guard, Qu Weiyin was pulled into a spin. Her skirt flared out gracefully before settling back down.
“Luo Jinxiao!” Qu Weiyin warned her with a frown, but Luo Jinxiao ignored her. Shaking her head, she said with a hopeful smile, “Junior Shishu, do you trust me?”
Qu Weiyin’s lips parted slightly, but she didn’t answer.
The solution had only just occurred to Luo Jinxiao. In her initial panic, she had completely forgotten about it. Now, with renewed hope, she had rushed out, relieved that there was s till a chance to salvage the situation.
“Luo Jinxiao?” Qu Chengzhou frowned, a wave of unease washing over him. His expression darkened. “This is the Qu family residence! You cannot simply barge in as you please!”
Luo Jinxiao ignored him. Taking out something from her sleeve, she suddenly covered Qu Weiyin’s mouth and shoved the object—a pill—between her lips.
Qu Weiyin instinctively tried to spit it out, but Luo Jinxiao held her tight, preventing her from moving.
“Don’t move, you’ll choke,” Luo Jinxiao whispered. Only when she was certain Qu Weiyin had swallowed did she release her.
“What was that?” Qu Weiyin’s eyes widened. She glanced at Luo Jinxiao’s hand, her cheeks flushed from the surprise of being muffled. She instinctively hid her face behind her sleeve, revealing only her eyes.
Luo Jinxiao found her flustered reaction endearing. Taking out a wooden box from her sleeve, she said with a playful smile, “A spirit pill.”
Qu Weiyin stared at her for a moment, then her eyes widened. As if splashed with ink, the clear sky above suddenly darkened ominously.
A clap of thunder echoed from the horizon, rolling closer with the churning clouds. The sound reverberated through the air, as if countless thunder gods were playing a symphony, making the ground tremble.
“Someone’s advancing in cultivation!” someone shouted from the crowd. Everyone looked around, speculating about who it could be.
Judging by the intensity of the celestial phenomena, the person must be advancing by at least two levels, and to a very high cultivation stage at that. Otherwise, it wouldn’t cause such a disturbance in the heavens.
Qu Weiyin clutched her chest in shock, looking at Luo Jinxiao in disbelief.
“Is that… a spirit pill from the Ten Directions Grand Gathering?” Her voice was shaky. “Those are incredibly precious. You…” She trailed off, unable to finish her sentence. An immense surge of spiritual energy flooded her meridians. The damage she had sustained earlier was instantly healed, and the energy continued to flow, revitalizing her entire being.
Noticing the clear signs of Qu Weiyin’s improved cultivation, Luo Jinxiao couldn’t help but grin. Feeling a surge of confidence, she reached out and gently patted Qu Weiyin’s wind-tousled hair.
“Consider it a repayment for saving me, Junior Shishu,” she said, her voice clear as a mountain spring.
Qu Chengzhou, watching the scene unfold, stepped forward. But with a swift, sharp flick of Qu Weiyin’s sleeve, he was forced back, nearly stumbling. He caught himself, one hand gripping his robe, and barked, “Weiyin!”
“Silence.” Qu Weiyin’s gaze was as sharp and cold as ice. The pressure of her now fully-restored cultivation, at the second stage of Tribulation Transcendance, rolled outwards like a storm, sending the onlookers scattering.
Bathed in the ethereal light, her red robes billowing in the wind, she resembled a god descended from the heavens.
“Step back or you might get hurt,” she said, turning to Luo Jinxiao with a stern look. “How foolish of you. We’ll settle this later.”
Luo Jinxiao’s smile widened. She obediently stepped back.
It was a shame to use such a precious spirit pill, she thought, but I don’t regret it. She picked up an ornate chair and sat down comfortably, looking up at Qu Weiyin, her figure even more captivating amidst the wind.
Sensing a fight brewing, the Qu family members scattered like startled birds, darting for cover beneath eaves and into corners, their eyes peeking out to witness the impending clash. Even the fierce-looking elder retreated with unexpected swiftness, clutching his cane tightly as he withdrew.
“I am the rightful heir to the position of family head. If Elder Qu wishes to dispute this, then let’s follow the old ways and fight.” With a flick of her wrist, the Crescent Moon Star Sword appeared in her hand, engulfed in flames. Crackling arcs of lightning danced around her, amplifying her already formidable power.
“Tribulation Transcendance stage,” Qu Chengzhou said, his face as dark as the stormy sky.
“Actually, Elder Qu, it’s the second stage of Tribulation Transcendance,” Luo Jinxiao helpfully interjected. Qu Chengzhou whirled around, pointing his sword at her and ordering her to be silent.
Qu Weiyin caught the movement. With a flick of her wrist, she sent the Crescent Star Sword flying. It collided with Qu Chengzhou’s sword, knocking it aside. “I warned you, Elder Qu,” she said, her voice dangerously low. “Don’t touch her.”
Qu Weiyin: don’t you dare touch my wife
