Chapter 76: Sharing a Pillow

Luo Jinxiao involuntarily let out an “oh” and stopped insisting.

Qu Weiyin slowly sat back on the bed. Luo Jinxiao bent down, supporting her shoulders and helping her lie down and take off her shoes.

Luo Jinxiao’s long hair fell onto Qu Weiyin’s arm, smooth and cool to the touch.

“You should go back and rest early,” Qu Weiyin said, closing her eyes.

Luo Jinxiao suddenly remembered Qu Weiyin’s frequent nightmares and couldn’t help but worry. “Junior Shishu, I’m not tired. How about I stay with you tonight?” she asked.

“That wouldn’t be proper,” Qu Weiyin shook her head.

“Alright,” Jinxiao replied reluctantly, but couldn’t disagree. She carefully tucked Qu Weiyin in before turning to leave.

She didn’t see Qu Weiyin open her eyes behind her, staring intently at her retreating figure.

The room fell silent again, but Qu Weiyin couldn’t fall asleep. She lay still for a while, her mind still wide awake. She knew she should stay clearheaded, but lately she couldn’t help but indulge in her emotions.

Qu Weiyin, oh Qu Weiyin, you’ve lived for thousands of years in vain, unable to even suppress this little bit of care.

It was the first time she felt so thoroughly lost, not knowing which choice would lead to a good outcome and which would lead to irreversible consequences.

Humans, after developing attachments, become weak.

However, if Luo Jinxiao heard this, she would surely disagree. Luo Jinxiao was always so optimistic and carefree.

But she was, after all, the elder. She had to consider what Luo Jinxiao couldn’t.

Qu Weiyin slowly raised her hand, her soft jade-like fingers curling and uncurling, casting shadows in the moonlight. With a flick of her slender index finger, the candle flame ignited, and with another flick, it extinguished.

In the alternating light and darkness, her hand slowly fell back onto her body.

Meanwhile, Luo Jinxiao stood under the eaves with her arms outstretched. The Hanyun Pavilion covered the entire cliff, leaving only a small space where she could barely stand. She pressed herself tightly against the wall to ensure she wouldn’t fall.

She had intended to stay longer and leave only after Qu Weiyin fell into a peaceful sleep. However, Qu Weiyin claimed to be tired but then played with the candlelight after she left.

Poor Luo Jinxiao had been standing there for so long that her body was nearly stiff.

But now, the candlelight had finally gone out and remained extinguished. Luo Jinxiao figured Qu Weiyin must have fallen asleep, so she opened the door and held her breath, intending to peek inside.

Suddenly, she heard Qu Weiyin gasp. The shadow on the bed sat up abruptly, aggravating her injuries, and she doubled over, coughing violently.

Luo Jinxiao rushed forward and patted her back. “Junior Shishu, are you alright?”

Qu Weiyin shook her head. She was drenched in sweat from coughing. Supporting herself with her arms, she turned to look at Luo Jinxiao, her expression surprised. “Why are you still here?”

“I didn’t leave. I wanted to wait until you fell asleep before going back. Did you have another nightmare?” Luo Jinxiao couldn’t hide the concern in her voice.

“I dreamt of some past events,” Qu Weiyin said, her gaze empty as she looked into the distance.

“It’s nothing,” she added.

“Forget it, I’ll stay here with you.” Luo Jinxiao got up, grabbed a bedding roll from somewhere, and spread it out beside Qu Weiyin’s bed with a flick of her wrist.

She plopped down on the ground, using her arm as a pillow, her bright eyes looking up at Qu Weiyin.

Qu Weiyin didn’t refuse this time. She shook her head helplessly, withdrew her hand, and lay on her side.

“What did you dream about, Junior Shishu?” Luo Jinxiao suddenly asked, curious.

Qu Weiyin was silent for a moment, then frowned. “I dreamt… that I killed you.”

Luo Jinxiao guiltily averted her gaze.

“It’s alright, it was just a dream. And even if it were real, you can kill me if you want. I’m pretty hard to kill,” Luo Jinxiao joked.

“Nonsense!” Qu Weiyin’s tone suddenly became stern, and she looked at her reproachfully. “Don’t speak so carelessly about such things.”

Luo Jinxiao stuck out her tongue, thinking that it was better not to tell Qu Weiyin about her past life, lest she blame herself again.

Perhaps it was because of Luo Jinxiao’s presence, or perhaps Qu Weiyin truly wasn’t feeling well, but before long, she became still. However, she soon fell into another nightmare, her body curling up tightly, clutching the corner of the blanket.

Seeing Qu Weiyin like this, Luo Jinxiao couldn’t sleep. She got up and sat on the bed, wiping the sweat off Qu Weiyin’s forehead.

The sweat had caused strands of hair to stick to Qu Weiyin’s skin, making it look even more translucent and flawless. As Luo Jinxiao carefully moved the hair away, her heart began to race, and she didn’t know where to put her hands.

It wasn’t that she was being indecent, but with such a vulnerable and alluring beauty lying beside her, how could she not have other thoughts?

Moreover, Qu Weiyin in her sleep was completely different from when she was awake. When awake, she was cold and distant, untouchable. But when she had nightmares, she clung to anything within reach.

At this moment, her fair and delicate arms were exposed, tightly hugging Luo Jinxiao’s arm. To avoid disturbing her, Luo Jinxiao could only bend over, which quickly led to an aching back.

She thought about switching arms for Qu Weiyin to hold, but it didn’t help much.

“Jinxiao,” Qu Weiyin murmured, her breathing soft but clearly audible in the quiet room.

Luo Jinxiao’s heart melted at the sound of her name in Qu Weiyin’s sleep-talking. She sighed and slowly lay down beside Qu Weiyin.

Since there was no rule against intimacy between women, she grew bolder.

Though lying next to such a soft and fragrant beauty, Luo Jinxiao didn’t dare move a muscle. She lay stiffly, eyes fixed on the canopy above. After a long while, Qu Weiyin finally let go and fell into a deep sleep.

Luo Jinxiao turned to face Qu Weiyin, thinking her face looked mesmerizingly beautiful in the moonlight.

Qu Weiyin shifted, moving closer and closer to Luo Jinxiao until they could smell each other’s scent. Luo Jinxiao slowly reached out her hand, but withdrew it the instant she touched Qu Weiyin.

She was eager to learn more about her, but she knew it wasn’t the right time.

“Junior Shishu, don’t be afraid,” Luo Jinxiao whispered.

Qu Weiyin mumbled something unintelligible and suddenly leaned forward, resting her cheek on Luo Jinxiao’s shoulder. Luo Jinxiao’s heart raced as she tilted her head back, trying not to think too much.

The woman’s mature body was alluring and enchanting, her red robe outlining her graceful curves.

Luo Jinxiao suddenly felt that she should find a Buddhist scripture to read tomorrow.

Qu Weiyin slept through the night while Luo Jinxiao watched her the entire time. As dawn broke, she slowly rolled off the bed and tiptoed away.

Hidden halfway up the secluded Wuhui Mountain, a bamboo house nestled amidst a boundless flower garden. The morning breeze blew, sending petals fluttering down, landing softly on the roof.

The morning mist carried the fragrance of flowers, occasionally punctuated by birdsong, creating an ethereal and tranquil atmosphere.

As Luo Jinxiao entered the flower garden, she saw petals swirling in the wind, forming a path that led deeper into the woods.

She followed the path and saw the Sect Leader standing at the entrance, her silver hair pulled back into a smooth bun, with only two strands hanging loose, framing her face.

The wind blew the strands of hair, making her look even more ethereal.

“Sect Leader!” Luo Jinxiao’s face lit up as she ran over.

“You’re back,” the Sect Leader said, a smile playing on her lips.

“Why are you standing at the door so early? Did you know I was coming back?” Luo Jinxiao chuckled, following her up the bamboo steps and into the house.

“I sensed your return the moment you entered the Wuhui Sect.”

“As expected of the Sect Leader,” Luo Jinxiao scratched her head. “Oh right, I brought the thing you were looking for.”

As Luo Jinxiao spoke, she reached for her pouch, only to find her waist empty. She froze for a moment, then slapped her forehead. “Oh no, I left my pouch on Junior Shishu’s bed.”

The Sect Leader’s clear eyes widened, and she coughed, covering her mouth with her sleeve.

“I was wondering why you didn’t come to see me after returning. So you were delayed by this matter. It’s fine, you can retrieve it later.”

Luo Jinxiao quickly explained, “Don’t misunderstand, Sect Leader. Junior Shishu has a habit of having nightmares, so I just stayed with her.”

“It’s alright, it’s alright,” the Sect Leader said, shaking her head with a smile in her eyes.

Luo Jinxiao grimaced. She didn’t believe the Sect Leader wasn’t thinking too much into it.

The Sect Leader gestured for her to sit at the bamboo table in the room. As she did so, a cup of freshly brewed tea appeared on the table.

Luo Jinxiao gathered her skirt and sat down, picking up the teacup and swirling it in her hand. “Why does the Sect Leader want the Shan He Tu?” she asked.

“How did you know it’s the Shan He Tu?” The Sect Leader asked softly as she sat across from Luo Jinxiao, her snow-white sleeves spreading at her sides.

“Did Qu Weiyin tell you?” she asked.

Luo Jinxiao took a sip of tea and nodded.

“I’m surprised she recognized it,” the Sect Leader said, surprised, her pale eyelashes lowered. “It’s nothing. You must have worked hard to retrieve it. Rest in the sect for a few days.”

“I haven’t seen my master yet,” Luo Jinxiao sighed. “He’ll be angry that I left without telling him.”

The Sect Leader nodded slightly. “He was furious, threatening to give you a beating.”

Luo Jinxiao’s breath hitched.

“Not just you, but me as well. The entire Wuhui Sect has received the news. In a few days, they plan to welcome the Sect Leader down the mountain to formally establish a new Sect Leader,” the Sect Leader said, her expression weary as she gazed past Luo Jinxiao into the distance.

Luo Jinxiao knew she was thinking of Zhao Zhao again. Her heart ached, and she drank her tea in silence.

“Sect Leader…” After a long while, she finally spoke, but the Sect Leader interrupted her.

“No need to persuade me. There are some things I can’t let go of,” the Sect Leader murmured.

Luo Jinxiao took a few more sips of tea, then gathered her courage, ready to face Elder Liu with the spirit of someone prepared to flee at any moment. Just as she was about to leave, she suddenly remembered something and turned back. “Sect Leader, do you have any… calming mantras or something?”

The Sect Leader was right. As soon as Luo Jinxiao saw Elder Liu, he chased her all over the sect. They bumped into disciples who were up early for their morning cultivation. The disciples, abandoning their training, gathered by the roadside, munching on buns and sipping porridge, watching the spectacle with amusement.

Luo Jinxiao pleaded with Elder Liu to give her, his senior disciple, some face, but it was to no avail. Only when the entire sect had gathered, crowding the area, did Elder Liu finally throw down the cane in his hand and leave with a dark expression.

Luo Jinxiao leaned against a tree, panting and wiping the sweat off her brow. Lu Fanzhi approached with a smile, patted her shoulder, and said, “Senior Sister Luo, your reputation precedes you. Five years after entering the sect, and you’re still getting beaten by your master. It could only be you.”

“If you don’t speak, no one will think you’re mute,” Luo Jinxiao retorted, still catching her breath.

“Have you seen Junior Shishu?” Luo Jinxiao asked.

“Yes. Oh, I forgot to tell you. In the five years you were gone, Junior Shishu took on a disciple. For someone who never accepts disciples to do so, this person must be something special,” Lu Fanzhi said with a sigh.

“What? Junior Shishu took on a disciple?” Luo Jinxiao exclaimed loudly, drawing stares.

Lu Fanzhi quickly covered her mouth. “Keep your voice down! Why are you so excited about Junior Shishu Qu taking on a disciple? She doesn’t teach the disciple much anyway. It’s quite pitiful.”

Luo Jinxiao couldn’t help but feel agitated and even angry. Back then, she had even matched her spirit stone with Qu Weiyin’s, but Qu Weiyin would rather shatter her spirit stone than accept her as a disciple. How could she now quietly take on someone else?

Her anger soared as she strode past Lu Fanzhi, determined to see what was so special about this small disciple.

How dare someone try to steal her Junior Shishu!

At that moment, Qu Weiyin was in a pavilion near Wuhui Palace, her red robes fluttering as she held a book, lecturing to some new disciples. Seeing Luo Jinxiao rushing over from afar, she put down the book and watched her approach.

“Senior Sister Luo!” a young man named Ke Tao called out, and the others followed suit.

Luo Jinxiao was caught off guard by the sudden attention and felt a little flustered. She glanced around but didn’t see any girl who looked like she could be vying for her Junior Shishu.

“Please continue, I’ll come back later,” Luo Jinxiao said, trying to sound calm and friendly, but the resentment in her eyes was unconcealed.

“No need. If you have something to say, say it,” Qu Weiyin said flatly.

Luo Jinxiao steeled herself. If Qu Weiyin wanted her to speak, she would. “Junior Shishu, I left my pouch on your bed last night!”

The pavilion erupted in gasps, and the dozen or so new disciples exchanged confused glances.

Qu Weiyin never expected her to say that. Her hand trembled, and the brand-new book slipped from her grasp, landing in the flower bed and getting covered in mud.
