Chapter 87: How Many Children

โ€œUnwavering?โ€ Luo Jinxiao blushed slightly at the blatant confession, but then her heart leaped with joy. It turned out Qu Weiyin had harbored these feelings for a long time.

โ€œSay it again,โ€ she pleaded, grinning from ear to ear.

“I won’t,” Qu Weiyin refused.

After the temple fair ended, they found an inn to rest, planning to depart the next morning.

Luo Jinxiao was idly gazing out the window when she noticed a figure sitting on the steps below. It was too dark to discern who it was, but after observing for a while, she decided to investigate.

โ€œYan Ying?โ€ Luo Jinxiao called out, approaching her and looking her over. โ€œItโ€™s almost midnight. What are you doing sitting here?โ€

Yan Ying glanced up, snorted lightly, and ignored her.

Confused, Luo Jinxiao sat down beside her and looked up at the crescent moon.

They sat in silence for a while before Yan Ying finally spoke, her expression confused.

โ€œIs Luo Ning asleep?โ€

“Probably,” Luo Jinxiao replied, then realized something was off. “You two haven’t been arguing again, have you?”

โ€œI havenโ€™t argued with her since returning from the Changming Pagoda. Iโ€™ve been giving in to her in everything, but lately, I feel like sheโ€™s been acting strange,โ€ Yan Ying said bitterly, hitting her own leg in frustration.

โ€œStrange how?โ€ Luo Jinxiao asked, feeling guilty. She realized she had rarely checked on Luo Ning since leaving Southern Peak.

“She keeps avoiding me, doesn’t even scold me anymore. It’s like she’s suddenly become distant,” Yan Ying sighed.

โ€œWe first met at the Luo family residence. I remember someone was bullying you, and Luo Ning single-handedly beat them to up. I knew then that she was special. But she didnโ€™t like to play with others, so I only bullied you to get her attention.โ€

Luo Jinxiao raised an eyebrow.

โ€œI donโ€™t understand whatโ€™s so good about you as a sister. Youโ€™re clumsy and foolish, yet sheโ€™s always hovering around you.โ€ Yan Ying grew increasingly agitated, glaring at Luo Jinxiao.

Luo Jinxiao felt unjustly accused by this sudden criticism.

“I heard that since you left the Luo family, she’s almost cut ties with them too,” Yan Ying added casually. She stood up and brushed off her skirt. โ€œForget it, Iโ€™m going to rest. You can enjoy the moon by yourself!โ€

Watching Yan Ying storm off, Luo Jinxiao felt like she had been used as a punching bag, but she couldnโ€™t bring herself to be angry, only feeling a deep sense of helplessness.

Perhaps she should have a talk with Luo Ning as well.

The next morning, before dawn broke, the four of them continued their journey. With her newfound divine power, Luo Jinxiao felt energetic despite barely sleeping.

She wore the robe Qu Weiyin had given her, its wide sleeves fluttering behind her like butterfly wings. She twirled in front of Qu Weiyin, asking proudly if she looked good.

โ€œYou look beautiful,โ€ Qu Weiyin replied with a smile, her phoenix eyes sparkling.

Perhaps to avoid attracting attention, Qu Weiyin wasnโ€™t wearing her fiery red robes, but a simple white outfit. Standing side by side, they looked remarkably well-matched.

Suddenly, Qu Weiyinโ€™s smile vanished. She scanned their surroundings and said with a frown, โ€œSomeone is following us.โ€

Luo Jinxiao slowed down and extended her spiritual senses. Indeed, there were people behind them, and quite a few of them.

โ€œWho are they?โ€ Yan Ying craned her neck to look. โ€œWhy are they chasing us?โ€

โ€œThe Shengsi Sect,โ€ Qu Weiyin replied, her expression serious. She looked at Luo Jinxiao. โ€œTheyโ€™re probably following the demonic energy.โ€

Luo Jinxiao abruptly turned in mid-air, intending to intercept them, but Qu Weiyin caught her wrist. โ€œDonโ€™t. I’d rather avoid a conflict.”

As she spoke, Qu Weiyinโ€™s gaze dropped, avoiding Luo Jinxiaoโ€™s eyes.

Luo Jinxiao understood her fear and didnโ€™t insist. They accelerated their swords, heading southwest, hoping to shake off their pursuers. However, the Shengsi Sect seemed relentless, refusing to give up the chase.

After two hours, the river below them curved, giving way to a lush green plain. Yan Ying, growing impatient, turned around and shouted, โ€œAre they ever going to stop? Theyโ€™ve been chasing us for so long! Just let me go back and beat them up and throw them down!โ€

โ€œCan you even beat them?โ€ Luo Ning retorted coldly.

Yan Ying fell silent, looking quite hurt.

โ€œShould I go?โ€ Luo Jinxiao asked. She was also feeling angry. Being chased like this on what should have been a peaceful journey was humiliating. Moreover, her poor impression of the Shengsi Sect made her fingers itch for action.

Qu Weiyin was about to object, but Luo Jinxiao interrupted her, positioning herself in front of Qu Weiyin and speaking softly, “I know you’re afraid of hurting innocent people and accelerating your demonic transformation, but I’m not afraid. It’ll just be a moment, I’ll be right back.”

She tugged at Qu Weiyinโ€™s sleeve, her eyes shining brightly. โ€œI wonโ€™t get hurt, donโ€™t worry. Okay, Junior Shishu?โ€

Qu Weiyin couldnโ€™t resist her pleading, especially when she used the term Junior Shishu. Her heart softened, and she nodded, frowning slightly. โ€œBe quick.โ€

Luo Jinxiao responded cheerfully and turned, disappearing like an arrow released from a bow.

The Shengsi Sect was not far behind them. Although they had a large number of members, none were a match for Luo Jinxiao. From a distance, she swung Wujue, and a transparent sword shadow dispersed the group of a dozen people. Some were instantly knocked out of the sky, disappearing from sight with only a few lingering cries.

Feeling playful, Luo Jinxiao hid in the clouds, forming a large net of spiritual energy with her right hand. She cast it out, catching the remaining pursuers who couldn’t dodge in time. They thrashed about like confused flies.

Luo Jinxiao found the scene quite amusing, chuckling to herself before turning to leave.

She caught up with Qu Weiyin and the others, and after two more days of travel, they were nearing the demon realm. The land below became increasingly desolate, mostly vast grasslands and swamps. The occasional tiny village they passed couldn’t accommodate them.

Luo Jinxiao summoned Qiongqi, and they spent the night on her furry back, continuing their journey without delay.

Late into the night, the four of them were cultivating separately. Luo Jinxiao stealthily approached Luo Ning and sat beside her, her legs resting in the soft fur. The moonlight washed over them, and the cool night breeze brought a sense of tranquility.

โ€œSister,โ€ Luo Ning greeted with a smile. Her face was no longer round but had a delicate curve to her jawline.

However, the smile didnโ€™t reach her eyes, and a hint of sadness lingered within them.

Luo Jinxiao didn’t know how to begin. She coughed a few times, then asked casually, “You haven’t seemed very happy these past few days. What’s wrong?”

โ€œItโ€™s nothing,โ€ Luo Ning replied, her gaze fixed on the star-studded sky.

โ€œHmmโ€ฆ maybe you can talk to your sister about it,โ€ Luo Jinxiao said with a strained smile. She wasnโ€™t accustomed to heart-to-heart conversations.

She could only force herself to ask.

Luo Ning turned to look at her, and Luo Jinxiao realized that Luo Ning’s eyes were just as dark as her own.

โ€œSister, Iโ€™ve been worried about you ever since Junior Shishu Qu succumbed to demonic cultivation,โ€ she confessed.

Luo Jinxiao hadnโ€™t expected her to bring this up. She laughed awkwardly, glancing towards Qu Weiyin, who was facing away from them and showed no reaction.

โ€œWorried about me? Why?โ€

โ€œWorried that your passion will turn into obsession, and in the end, youโ€™ll only hurt yourself,โ€ Luo Ning said suddenly. In the moonlight, her brows were drawn, and her eyes reddened.

Luo Jinxiao sighed and shook her head. โ€œDonโ€™t worry, I know that even if Junior Shishu succumbs to demonic cultivation, she would never hurt me.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s not what I meant, Sister,โ€ Luo Ning said sadly. She sighed deeply and continued, โ€œBut itโ€™s okay. I will always follow you and protect you.โ€

โ€œYou canโ€™t always follow me. You need to find your own life,โ€ Luo Jinxiao said, feeling a sense of unease. She tried to reason with her.

โ€œI know what Iโ€™m doing,โ€ Luo Ning interrupted, turning her gaze back to the distance, clearly unwilling to continue the conversation.

Luo Jinxiao felt cornered, a lump in her throat. She could only stand up and leave.

She felt increasingly troubled. She had intended to have a heart-to-heart with her sister but ended up more confused than before.

Luo Ning definitely had something on her mind, and perhaps it had something to do with her.

The thoughts of a young woman were truly difficult to decipher.

She walked over to Qu Weiyin, who was hugging her knees, leaning against Qiongqi’s skyward-pointing tail. Her head was tilted slightly, phoenix eyes half-open, gazing at the faint Milky Way in the distance.

โ€œFinished chatting?โ€ she asked softly, hearing Luo Jinxiaoโ€™s footsteps.

Luo Jinxiao rubbed her head, realizing Qu Weiyin had indeed heard them. She quickly crouched down to explain, “I saw she was in a bad mood, so I wanted to talk to her.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s alright. Sheโ€™s your sister; itโ€™s normal for her to be worried about you,โ€ Qu Weiyin said nonchalantly, without looking at Luo Jinxiao.

An icy aura surrounded her, a clear indication of her displeasure. Luo Jinxiao sat beside her, her gaze fixed on her own nose, and said softly, โ€œJunior Shishu, arenโ€™t we on our way to find a solution? Once this journey is over, weโ€™ll find a secluded place and become a pair of dao companions, how about that?โ€

Seeing no response, Luo Jinxiao continued, “Or you could accompany me to the Sea of Exile. I’ve always been curious about what’s on the other side, ever since I was little. Just the two of us.”

โ€œItโ€™s a barren land, completely empty,โ€ Qu Weiyin replied.

โ€œI still want to see it,โ€ Luo Jinxiao mumbled, scratching her head. โ€œIโ€™ve only lived for a little over twenty years, and there are so many places I havenโ€™t been to yet.โ€

โ€œIโ€™ve lived for over two thousand years. It seems you think I’m too old,โ€ Qu Weiyin said suddenly. She turned her head, her phoenix eyes narrowed, a hint of anger in her blood-red irises.

Luo Jinxiao was taken aback and waved her hands frantically, on the verge of tears. โ€œOf course not! How could I think youโ€™re old? Although youโ€™ve lived for a long time, you donโ€™t look old at allโ€ฆโ€

The words tumbled out of her mouth before she could stop them. Luo Jinxiao wanted to punch herself, but it was too late. The coldness around Qu Weiyin intensified, and she turned her head away completely, refusing to look at her.

Luo Jinxiao didnโ€™t dare to speak. She sat beside Qu Weiyin for a while, then suddenly blurted out, โ€œDo you like children? How about we have a few?โ€

At these words, Yan Ying, who had been eavesdropping nearby, nearly fell off Qiongqi’s back in surprise.

Qu Weiyin’s face turned bright red. She quickly covered Luo Jinxiao’s mouth with her delicate hand, “What nonsense are you talking about?”

โ€œIโ€™m serious. But itโ€™s fine if you donโ€™t like children,โ€ Luo Jinxiao said earnestly, dodging Qu Weiyinโ€™s hand.

โ€œHow can weโ€ฆ?โ€ Qu Weiyin couldnโ€™t finish her sentence, overwhelmed by a mixture of anger and embarrassment.

Seeing her reaction, Luo Jinxiao burst into laughter, scooting closer and teasing, โ€œYou’re finally looking at me.โ€

Qu Weiyin realized she had fallen for Luo Jinxiao’s trick. Her anger turned to bashful annoyance, and she gently pushed her slender finger against Luo Jinxiao’s forehead. No matter how upset she had been, her heart melted.

Her gaze softened, and she tenderly tucked a stray strand of hair behind Luo Jinxiaoโ€™s ear, a smile gracing her lips.

Then, her body relaxed, and she rested her head on Luo Jinxiaoโ€™s shoulder.
